As we await Ellen DeGeneres‘s upcoming NBC sitcom One Big Happy, the funny lady teased everything we an expect to see come its March 17 premiere! ‘One Big Happy:’ Ellen DeGeneres’ Talks New Sitcom At TCA Winter Press Tour
One Big Happy is loosely based off the life of writer and comedian Liz Feldman, whose credits include 2 Broke Girls and The Ellen DeGeneres Show.
Elisha Cuthbert plays Liz, a single lesbian who gets pregnant by her straight male best friend, (Nick Zano), just as he meets the love of his life, according to our sister site, TV Line.
Liz cites the project to be where Ellen’s character left off in her ’90s sitcom Ellen, about a neurotic bookstore owner. The groundbreaking episode where she publicly came out,”The Puppy Episode”, had advertisers pull out of her funny project, though it paved the way for other sitcoms featuring strong LGBT leads like Modern Family and Glee.
“This show wouldn’t be possible if Ellen hadn’t come out in 1997,” Liz said. “We’re trying to pick up where [ABC comedy Ellen] left off — except it’s 18 years later and the world is ready for it on a new level.”
Ellen added, “It’s a very funny show — it just happens to have a lesbian character on it. What’s going to be great about this show is [the characters are] people you’ll love and watch, and you won’t think twice about any of it being ‘weird.”
Ironically, during the panel, news broke out that the Supreme Court will decide whether same sex marriage will be allowed in all 50 states. Well, Ellen is surely on top of the world now, and we can’t wait to watch her new sitcom!
