The quest for the next singing sensation continued on the Jan. 15 episode of ‘American Idol,’ bringing auditions to New York. Check out what happened when Seacrest and co. rolled into The Empire State!
During the second episode of the second week of the 14th season (got that?) of American Idol, auditions were still underway and they continued to bring the drama. Auditions brought us to New York, which was obviously going to be lousy with talent–and attitude! Also, along with regular judges Jennifer Lopez and Harry Connick Jr., we got a special treat in guest judge Adam Lambert, subbing for Keith Urban, who himself is a former Idol contestant. See what went down in NY!
‘American Idol’: New York & Adam Lambert Come Together
New York is known for its no nonsense citizens, and that was pretty clearly reflected when Idol auditions came to town. NYC also has special meaning on Idol since it’s the hometown to judge JLo! So, did her hometown represent?
Sal Valentinetti was only 19 but he and his thick New York accent made an impression. Fittingly, he sang Sinatra–just don’t call him Sicilian! Harry ended up betting him 100 dollars that he didn’t know the real title of “Fly Me to the Moon” (it’s “In Other Words”) and Harry had to pay up! As it turns out, Sal could really croon. Mr. Valentinetti, you’re going to Hollywood!
Next came the touching story Jax (who only goes by that one name), who is only 18 and whose father is a New York firefighter that actually helped to rescue those trapped in the Twin Towers on 9/11– he was there to cheer his daughter on. With a story that good, did she have the pipes to match? Yup! Singing The Beatles classic “I Wanna Hold Your Hand” while accompanying herself on the piano, her voice was unique and chilling. JLo called her an intriguing mix of “shy and confident.” We could cry!
Shi Scott had the unenviable task of taking on Amy Winehouse‘s classic “Valerie,” and the 19-year-old was so nervous she almost couldn’t start singing. Luckily, Adam gave her an adorable pep talk telling her to just “enjoy it,” and she did. She was heading to Hollywood!
After all those golden tickets, we were due for some less than stellar auditioners, right? Right. We were treated to a very…special montage of some of those people. We won’t delve into it, but there were multiple cowboy hats, leopard button downs and comb overs.
Blondes Have More Fun
The next segment was called “Blonde Ambition” because–shocker– it featured three young women who were all blonde. Blondes really might have more fun, though, because Maddie Walker, 16, Courtney Zahn, 21, Jackie Nese, 17 were all given golden tickets.
After the trio of blondes, things slowed down for a little while. That was until Harry asked Adam to audition for him– and Adam agreed! Cue the season 8 Adam audition footage! Adam got up from his seat and stood before the judges just like every other person. Then, the kicker, he sang the exact same song he auditioned with six years ago! You bet your behind he got a golden ticket!
The only other remarkable performance was actually a double audition. Yanni G, 23, sang Anna Kendrick‘s “Cups”– and she even brought her own red plastic cup! She auditioned along with her boyfriend , Nick Fradiani, 28 who sang Peter Gabriel’s “In Your Eyes.” Sadly, only Nick made it through, but at least she’ll be there to cheer him on in Hollywood.
And that about did it in NYC!
What did you guys think of New York’s auditions? Was the next American Idol just discovered?
