Two months after his terminally ill wife, Brittany Maynard, ended her own life, her heartbroken husband, Dan Diaz, shares details about her final day, and how she spent it surrounded by family.
Brittany Maynard, 29, made headlines in 2014 when she revealed her plans to end her life with a lethal dose of prescription medicine to avoid the painful death that would have come with her terminal brain cancer. Now, her husband, Dan Diaz, is opening up about Brittany’s decision, which he still fully supports, explaining that it was “her time” to go.
Brittany Maynard’s Husband Reveals Details Of Her Last Day
Showing his strength just two months after Brittany’s quiet and peaceful passing inside their home, her husband is finally ready to talk about his wife’s final moments.
In an interview, Dan explained that Brittany was still unsure of her decision until the very day she decided to take her own life by swallowing a lethal dose of prescription pills.
However, Dan said that her fate was sealed when she suffered another seizure that morning — a side effect of the ticking time bomb that was inside her brain.
“But the seizure that morning was a reminder of what she was risking because what was coming next was losing her eyesight, becoming paralyzed and an inability to speak,” Dan told the Today Show on Wednesday, Jan. 14. “And then she would essentially be trapped in her own body.”
So, Brittany and Dan did her favorite thing once she was feeling better: they went for a walk with her family, a friend, and a dog.
After the stroll, “she just knew that it was her time,” Dan said.
Brittany’s Lethal Dose Let Her Die In Her Sleep
During his interview, Dan revealed that they had been in possession of the prescription pills that would take her pain away since May 2014. At the time, Brittany was traveling in Alaska with her family, something that had been on her “bucket list.”
The pills were a mix of sedatives and respiratory depressants, and after Brittany consumed they she fell asleep in her own bed within just five minutes.
Thirty minutes later, sleeping soundly in the bed she shared with her husband, Brittany passed away without any pain or suffering.
