A 9-year-old Idaho boy’s parents are livid today, as their son was taken into police custody on Jan. 12. His crime? Stealing a pack of gum from a local business. The real twist? He was actually a wanted man, er, boy!
9 Year-Old Idaho Boy Arrested For Stealing Gum
A little boy in Idaho was arrested over a pack of stolen gum on Monday.
The arrest comes after the child missed two court hearings regarding his petty theft, which was originally reported sometime over the summer.
Police believe the boy failed to appear because his mother had some difficulty finding transportation to the court house.
Despite that fact, the judge still issued a warrant for the little boy’s arrest.
“A local judge issued an arrest warrant for a 9-year-old for failure to appear in court,” Police Chief Scott Haug explained to CNN. “Our officer located the child sometime last week, transported the child to the detention facility. The child was not handcuffed and was treated very well.”
Chief Haug admitted himself that the warrant was “odd” and called it “a most unusual circumstance.”
Idaho Prosecuters Call Gum-Theft Arrest A ‘Mistake’
County Prosecutor Barry McHugh spoke on his office’s behalf, calling the incident a mistake that slipped through the cracks somehow.
“After reviewing the file today, I have concluded that my office’s request to have an arrest warrant issued was a mistake under the circumstances,” McHugh told USA Today. “I regret this having taken place and will do everything in my power to avoid this type of mistake in the future.”
Wow! HollywoodLifers, what do you think about this shocking story?
