Officers Wenjian Liu and Raphael Ramos were believed to be on their lunch break when Ismaayil Brinsley, 28, approached their vehicle and shot them both at a close range. Sadly, both officers were killed in the violent attack that was reportedly the gunman’s way of “retaliating” against the police for the deaths of Eric Garner and Michael Brown.
The murder of two NYPD officers has become a national tragedy.
On Saturday, Dec. 20, in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn, two uniformed NYPD officers were sitting inside of their squad car, reportedly during their meal break, when a gunman approached and shot them both without warning.
Both officers were rushed to a nearby hospital, but unfortunately they both died from their injuries, reports ABC.
Witnesses have reported hearing about 4 or 5 gunshots before seeing the gunman run into a nearby subway station where he shot himself in the head and died instantly.
Since the horrific shooting occurred, officials have linked the gunman to another shooting in Baltimore, Maryland.
It has been reported that the gunman shot and killed his ex-girlfriend before coming to Brooklyn specifically to target the lives of NYPD officers.
After killing his ex, it is believed that the gunman used her social media account to post “anti-police” messages, including one that read he was going to “put wings” on “pigs.”
Officials believe the gunman acted alone and was trying to retaliate for the deaths of Eric Garner and Michael Brown, the two men of color who were killed by police officers in 2014.
Our thoughts go out to the families of the police officers during this very difficult time.
