Maria Jose Alvarado, 19, was set to fly to London to compete in Miss World Pageant on Dec. 14, but the last time she and sister Sofia Trinidad, 23, were seen was on Nov. 13 after stepping into a vehicle. Police are digging to get to the bottom of the disappearance, and as of Nov. 18, they’re holding four people for questioning.
Maria, who was crowned Miss Honduras in April, was last seen with her sister at a spa in Santa Barbara on Nov. 13. They have not been seen or heard from since.
Police originally detained six men, but have released a few of them as they continue to search for evidence of the disappearance, according to ABC.
One of the men being held for questioning is Sofia’s boyfriend, Plutarco Ruiz. Maria and Sofia were last seen at a spa 240 miles west of Tegucigalpa, where they went to celebrate Plutarco’s birthday. Another man being questioned is the business owner of the place the girls were last seen, where the sisters reportedly stepped into a vehicle shortly after and disappeared, AP reports.
“Witnesses said my daughter left the spa with three men,” Maria’s mom said. “I tried repeatedly all night to call their cellphones without any response. Open your hearts and understand my pain.”
Because there is no evidence of a kidnapping, the case is being treated as a disappearance. More information will be disclosed as the case continues to unfold.
