After all the controversy surrounding the Aaliyah biopic, Lifetime is finally set to give fans and viewers an intimate look into the late star’s life in ‘Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B,’ premiering on Nov. 15.
Settling on the right girl to portray Aaliyah was tricky, but after Zendaya, 18, dropped out, actress Alexandra Shipp, 23, landed the role of a Lifetime (literally), and in the TV movie, she takes on the singer tastefully. Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B chronicles the singer’s life from Star Search to just before her tragic, fatal, plane crash. We’ll leave it up to you guys to decide if the film did Aaliyah justice, but we will tell you five things you are guaranteed to feel, while watching the emotional movie.
1. You’ll feel motivated
We all know that Aaliyah’s rise to fame was insane and game-changing, and the movie does a great job of showcasing that. Pay attention to inspiring quotes that’ll stick with you, like this gem: “The depth of your struggle determines the height of your success.”
2. You’ll miss Aaliyah
Enough said. You’ll want to break out your old CDs and re-watch her killer performance of “Journey to the Past” at the 1998 Oscars. Aaliyah’s talent was and will always be undeniable, and the film serves as a powerful reminder of her legacy.
3. You will have all of your questions answered, when it comes to her secret romance with R. Kelly
Yes, her relationship with R. Kelly was controversial on so many different levels, but, the movie does do a good job at portraying the intense mentor-mentee bond that the two shared, which probably forced something more. There were a lot of feelings between the two, and the biopic pays homage to their relationship.
4. You’ll look forward to family time over the holidays
We had no clue how tight Aaliyah’s family was. The singer was super lucky to have the amazing support system that she did to shower her with a ton of love and kept the superstar grounded. Watch out for scenes with her spending some quality time with her brother and grandma. We can only imagine how difficult it was for her family to lose her at such a young age.
5. You’ll wonder when you last saw a bandana!
When the young talent was up-and-coming, her main priority was staying true to herself, and that meant embracing her own style with crop tops, baggy jeans and oversized varsity jackets. Aaliyah made street style look so good, and her unique and daring fashion choices might just (and probably should) make a come back.
