From the runway to the Great White Way! This week the designers faced off in teams of two, creating looks for the Good Witch and Bad witch from ‘Wicked’ — but not everyone had the judges singing praises!
Another week, another major surprise on Project Runway All Stars! Not only were the designers taken away from the work room on a field trip to Broadway, but they got to really go all out create gorgeous gowns, inspired by the two main female characters in Wicked — but like every runway challenge, there’s a twist! Who could pull off crafting a couture creation inspired by the musical?
‘Project Runway All Stars’ ‘Wicked’ Challenge Recap — Couture Dresses & Drama:
The designers were paired off, with one taking the Good Witch and the other taking the Bad Witch. In this challenge the contestants faced off against each other with their opposite looks — and there would only be one winner per group! The judges scored the pairs against each other — and while some excelled not everyone had the best luck.
Being paired off against each other definitely added an extra level of pressure to the challenge, as some felt threatened by the other designer’s abilities to craft couture-like creations. So, who would be in and who would be out?
Chris is known for his affinity for over-the-top, costume-like designs and drama on the runway, but for the challenge he went for something more dressed down, sending a grey dress down the runway in a very basic fabric that looked like jersey-cotton. Hmm.
Dimitry blew us away with his gorgeous black dress, which proved to be Wicked in all the right ways. The intricate detailing of the design stood out and the dress also showed some skin — it was sultry and chic! While he told the judges he didn’t want it to look too costume-like or theatrical, some thought he could’ve made it a bit more Wicked — but I disagree!
While he nailed the Bad Witch look out of the park in my book, Helen didn’t have the same luck when it came to designing a dress for the Good Witch. All of the time she spent working on the ruffled detailing wasn’t well received by the judges — and guest judge Ariel Winter admitted she didn’t love the ruffles, while Alyssa Milano appreciated the handwork Helen put into this week’s project.
Samantha wowed the judges with her gorgeous use of sequin embellishments on her Wicked black gown — and it was gorgeous! She came in second.
‘Project Runway All Stars’ Challenge Winner:
Sonji took home the prize for her Wicked creation and Chris was sent home. Ultimately the judges really thought he would shine in this challenge but were let down by his dress. It was a lackluster disappointment. While Betsey Johnson was a fan of it, Ariel thought it looked like a t-shirt dress from Hot Topic — ouch.
What do you think? Was the right designer sent home?
