‘Toy Story 4’ is heading to a theater near you in 2017, and fans are TOTALLY freaking out on Twitter. Read on for reactions ranging from ecstatic to despondent and for everything we know so far about the newest installment in the franchise!
It’s official — Toy Story 4 is heading to theaters after a basically perfect Toy Story 3 left audiences sobbing for days. The news was met with a pretty mixed reaction from fans on Twitter — while some are totally pumped to see more of Woody and Buzz, others thought that the franchise had already wrapped in the best possible way.
‘Toy Story 4’ Release Date Announced: Fans Freak Out On Twitter
Pixar will release Toy Story 4 on June 16, 2017, and the screenplay will be in the hands of Rashida Jones (star of Parks and Recreation) and Will McCormack (writer of Celeste and Jesse Forever, in which Rashida starred).
The story, however, was conceived by Pixar mainstays John Lasseter, Andrew Stanton (Wall-E), Pete Docter (Up), and Lee Unkrich (Toy Story 3). So, you should probably consider bringing a box of tissues along to the movie theater.
John will also be directing the film; he directed Toy Story (Pixar’s first-ever feature film, by the way) and Toy Story 2. For fans who are hesitant about the next installment, they need only believe in the man who brought Woody and Buzz to life in the first place.
“We love these characters so much; they are like family to us,” John said in a statement released by Disney. “We don’t want to do anything with them unless it lives up to or surpasses what’s gone before.
“Toy Story 3 ended Woody and Buzz’s story with Andy so perfectly that for a long time, we never even talked about doing another Toy Story movie.
“But when Andrew, Pete, Lee and I came up with this new idea, I just could not stop thinking about it. It was so exciting to me, I knew we had to make this movie — and I wanted to direct it myself.”
Doesn’t that sound comforting? John’s got this, you guys.
In case you’ve repressed Toy Story 3 for the sake of your mental health, it ended with Andy going off to college, leaving Woody, Buzz and the rest in the care of a young girl named Bonnie.
While it was a perfect end for the franchise at the time, the fact that the toys are in a new house can only mean a whole new set of adventures. Change is hard, but really, even detractors of the franchise’s latest sequel will no doubt find themselves in theaters on opening day — count it.
