Sorry, ladies (and gentlemen) — Benedict Cumberbatch is officially off the market. Sherlock Holmes proposed to girlfriend Sophie Hunter and he made the announcement via NEWSPAPER. Hop in your time machine and check out the ad!
Benedict Cumberbatch, 38, may have posed as Mr. Darcy for charity, but we didn’t know he was actually from the past! The actor announced his engagement to actress Sophie Hunter, 36, via the UK’s Times. Yes, a newspaper. Pretty adorable, really, and just the thing to make the legions of Benedict’s fans even more enamored with the actor. Sorry to them, and congrats to the happy couple!
Benedict Cumberbatch Engaged To Sophie Hunter: ‘Sherlock’ Actor Getting Married
“Mr B.T. Cumberbatch and Miss S.I. Hunter: The engagement is announced between Benedict, son of Wanda and Timothy Cumberbatch of London, and Sophie, daughter of Katharine Hunter of Edinburgh and Charles Hunter of London,” the announcement read.
The advert is the real deal — Benedict’s rep further confirmed the news with the UK’s Daily Mirror, telling them: “I am delighted to confirm this morning’s announcement that Benedict Cumberbatch and Sophie Hunter are engaged.”
Look out — it gets even more old-fashioned. The Mirror also reports that Benedict sought the blessing of Sophie’s mother when he took a trip to Edinburgh last month.
We wonder what Sophie’s dowry is like!
Benedict Cumberbatch & Sophie Hunter’s Relationship Confirmed In June 2014
Benedict and Sophie are a relatively private couple; their relationship was first confirmed in June when they were photographed together at the French Open. It’s unclear how long they’ve really been dating, but they likely met for the first time in 2009, when they both appeared in the film Burlesque Fairytales.
Sophie is a multitalented woman — in 2007, she won the Samuel Beckett award for writing and directing her play The Terrific Electric. Since then, she has directed and starred in a number of prestigious stage productions.
Benedict is, of course, best known for his role as Sherlock Holmes in the BBC’s Sherlock and for his roles in huge films like Star Trek: Into Darkness and in the Hobbit franchise. He is rumored to be playing the title character in Marvel’s upcoming Dr. Strange, but the news has yet to be confirmed.
