Andrew Madoff, son of the infamous Bernie Madoff — who became the most hated man in the country after defrauding thousands of people in the largest ponzi scheme in history — died of cancer on Sept. 3 in a New York City hospital.
Andrew was Bernie’s last surviving son before his untimely death. Andrew’s brother, Mark, committed suicide in 2010.
“Andrew Madoff has lost his courageous battle against mantle cell lymphoma,” his attorney said in a statement. “He died peacefully at Sloan Kettering on September 3, 2014, surrounded by his loving family.”
The deceased brothers both previously worked for their father’s firm on the trading side. The two were not connected to their father’s scheme, which bilked investors out of about $65 billion dollars.
Speaking to People magazine in 2013 about the cancer that had come back to haunt him for a second time, Andrew said, “I was blindsided.”
“I had no symptoms,” he continued. “I felt fine.”
Andrew told the mag that he felt his father’s devious actions had added extra stress to him and essentially caused his cancer to return.
“One way to think of this is the scandal and everything that happened killed my brother very quickly,” he said. “And it’s killing me slowly.”
After his father was sentenced to several life terms in prison, Andrew said, “I will never forgive him for what he did. He’s already dead to me.”
