Miley managed to make headlines at the 2014 VMAs, but this time for a noble cause. Instead of accepting her Video of the Year award for “Wrecking Ball,” she allowed her date Jesse to do the honors. His speech about his time as a runaway put Miley in tears, and now everyone wants to know more about Miley’s brave new friend.
Here’s 5 things you need to know about Jesse:
1. He used the speech as an opportunity to raise awareness for the charity My Friend’s Place.
During Jesse’s speech, he told the audience as well as viewers about his time as a homeless youth. He told everyone to head to Miley’s Facebook page to learn more about the charity that helps young runaways called My Friend’s Place.
The charity’s mission is to help homeless youths build self-sufficient lives, according to the charity’s website. The organization is currently helping more than 1,700 youths with education, health and job assistance.
The charity began in 1988 when Steve LePore and Craig Scholz started handing out lunches to homeless youths in Hollywood. In 1990, they opened a homeless center in Los Angeles to help young people from ages 12 to 25. The privately-funded organization offers social services and creative opportunities as well as basic needs.

2. Miley met Jesse at My Friend’s Place.
Heather Carmichael, executive director of the charity, said Miley met Jesse at My Friend’s Place on Aug. 19, according to the New York Times. Heather said that Jesse had received help from the charity.
Miley posted a video to her Facebook page about her involvement with My Friend’s Place. She is launching a campaign to help stop youth homelessness as well as raise awareness.
