Yikes! Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Johnny Manziel gave the middle finger to the Washington Redskins during a tense game on Aug. 19. Do YOU think Johnny was out of line?
It was a fleeting gesture, but one that just may have marked his career. Johnny Manziel, 21, flipped the Washington bench the bird after his opponents, including Redskins linebacker Brian Orakpo, reportedly taunted him from the sidelines. Although Johnny later said that he regretted his actions, it looks like the damage has already been done!
Johnny Manziel Flips Off Redskins: Browns Rookie Flashes Middle Finger
In a cheeky move that may have provoked Johnny’s shocking middle finger to Washington, Brian Orakpo reportedly raised his hands in the air and showed off the 2012 Heisman Trophy winner’s “money” gesture after Redskins outside linebacker Ryan Kerrigan sacked Johnny.
But the timing of Johnny’s comeback finger couldn’t have been worse. The game was intended to be a competition between Johnny and fellow Cleveland quarterback Brian Hoyer, for the top spot on the team. If it were a choice based on maturity, Brian would certainly claim he coveted position. However, if it were a choice based on yardage, Johnny has the advantage, as he finished 7 for 16 for 65 yards and a touchdown, whereas Brian was 2 of 6 passes for 16 yards.
In a post-game interview with reporters, Johnny said of his actions that he “should have been smarter,” because words are exchanged during every game. Plus, it was Monday night football, so he should’ve known that the cameras would be on him the entire time, he said.
Mike Pettine: Johnny Manziel’s Actions Are ‘Disappointing’
Cleveland Browns head coach Mike Pettine, for one, was not happy about his player’s obscene gesture. “It’s disappointing. Because what we talk about is being poised and being focused — that you have to be able to maintain your poise and focus … That’s a big part of all football players, especially the quarterback.”
Mike now has to decide whether Brian or Johnny will start during the regular season, but given both quarterbacks’ poor performances, it’s unlikely that he will make his choice before this coming Tuesday.
So what do YOU think, HollywoodLifers? Do you think Johnny’s actions were out of line or was he provoked? Let us know!
