Darren is a six-year veteran from the St. Louis area and was treated for injuries after the accident, Thomas said. He has had no history of disciplinary action taken against him.
Thomas told CNN anchor Don Lemon that Darren is “devastated” over Michael’s death. “This is his community,” Thomas said. “He never wanted any of this to happen.”
Michael was shot and killed on Aug. 9. The police chief has said that there was a struggle for the arresting officer’s weapon, CNN reports. Witnesses have said Michael’s arms were allegedly raised when he was fatally shot, the outlet claims.
After the teen’s death, violent protests erupted in Ferguson over the tragedy. Police were called after a gas station was looted and arrived in riot gear, St. Louis County Police spokesman Brian Schellman said, according to CNN. More and more protests began to start and over 100 police officers were called to control the situation, the outlet reports.
Thomas said that these situations were “riot conditions” and protestors were saying “kill the police” and “killer cops have got to go,” the outlet reports. SWAT was called eventually in on Aug. 10.
Tear gas was used by police on Aug. 13, journalist Rembert Browne from Grantland shared on his Twitter. Stun grenades and plastic pellets were also used by police, CNN reports. The Missouri State Highway Patrol took over security for the protests on Aug. 14.
Police have now named Michael as a suspect in a convenience store robbery shortly before his death, Ferguson police documents say, according to CNN. The documents say that Michael stole cigars from the store. Darren received a 911 call about a robbery and responded to the call. That’s when he came face-to-face with Michael, according to the police chief. Other officers were also on the scene.
President Obama spoke about the tragedy and the violence that has been happening in Ferguson on Aug. 14.
“There is never an excuse for violence against police or for those who would use this tragedy as a cover for vandalism or looting,” the President said. “There is also no excuse for police to use excessive force against peaceful protests or to throw protesters in jail for lawfully exercising their First Amendment rights.”
Let’s hope the town of Ferguson can start to find peace after such tragedy.
UPDATE: A preliminary autopsy revealed that Michael was shot at least six times, including twice in the head.
