The Crawley’s would never approve of such a public scandal! A promotion picture for season five of ‘Downton Abbey’ caused an online sensation when a sharp-eyed fan noticed something modern and out-of-place in the background of the shot. Can you spot the historical slip-up?
Downton Abbey stars, Hugh Bonneville, 50, and Laura Carmichael, 28, who play the Earl of Grantham and Lady Edith, have been upstaged! A promotional picture for the upcoming fifth season is getting plenty of attention after a fan spotted a historically inaccurate water bottle in the background of the shot that is set in 1924!
‘Downton Abbey’ Season 5 Water Bottle
While Mr.Carson did warn of a big change to come in the season five trailer, we are fairly certain this is not what he was talking about. Placed right behind Laura’s shoulder is a clear as day plastic water bottle!
According to BBC News, while this water bottle is getting plenty of attention, it is certainly not the first historical blunder that has occurred on the show. The site reports several mistakes, including episodes that, “featuring television aerials, double-yellow lines and even a modern conservatory. Viewers have also complained about anachronistic language – including 1960s phrases such as “get stuffed” or “get knotted” – appearing in the script.”
The site reports that writer, Julian Fellowes, has strongly defended the show and it’s accuracy. “The programme is pretty accurate. The real problem is with people who are insecure socially, and they think to show how smart they are by picking holes in the programme to promote their own poshness and to show that their knowledge is greater than your knowledge,” he said.
The Guardian reported that fan, Diana Pearl, offered a possible hilarious explanation for the water bottle, tweeting: “Obviously the Crawley family invented the water bottle, and that’s how they were able to support the estate.”
We have to wonder what Maggie Smith‘s character, Violet, Dowager Countess of Grantham, would have to say about the mistake!
‘Downton Abbey’ Season 5 Photos
While fans of the show may have to wait until the series returns on January 4, 2015, brand new photos from the upcoming season have finally been revealed!
As HollywoodLife.com previously reported, the adorable pictures show that we are going to get to see plenty more of the children growing up!
In the two photos we get to see Miss Sybbie Branson, who is played by four-year-old actress Fifi Hart. Sybbie is the daughter of former chauffeur Tom Branson and his wife, the late Lady Sybil. Fifi looks adorable in her period piece get-up and has bright blue eyes and blunt bangs — adorable!
In the second photo, we see Master George Crawley, son of Lady Mary and the late Matthew Crawley, played by three-year-old twins Oliver and Zac Barker. George is the heir apparent to the Earldom, and looks like the spitting image of his father!
