Rory McIlroy wins the Claret Jug! After a final round of golf at the Royal Liverpool Golf Club in Merseyside, England, Rory emerged the winner of the British Open Championship on July 20.

When you’re playing in one of the hardest tournaments in golf, even the best of the best are going to either play like victors or just fall flat. The best of the best in all of golf were in England on July 20 for the British Open Championship. After three intense rounds of golf, Rory McIlroy, 25, took home the Claret Jug and was named the 2014 British Open Champion. Congrats!

Rory McIlroy Wins The British Open

Rory McIlroy wins the British Open Championship! The 25-year-old secured his third major championship trophy on July 20.

After a hard fought battle with Sergio Garcia, who crept up on Rory in the final round, Rory emerged victorious. Rory beat Sergio by two shots to take home the Claret Jug.

Sergio started to come up on Rory, even just being three shots behind him before the back nine. But Rory ultimately proved to be the better player.

After his big win, Rory immediately hugged his mom. He shared his sweet sentiment in an interview post-win. It was the first time that his mother attended a championship that he won.

“It’s really nice to share a moment like this with them,” he said.

He also shared how his “determination” and “hard work” helped get him into this winning position.

“It’s a big moment,” he said. “I feel like I’ve come a long way in the past 18 months. A lot has happened to me…on and off the golf course. I just think my determination and hard work has really paid off.”

It sure has, Rory.

Tiger Woods, in his first major tournament in almost one year, made his presence known in the first round. Despite bogeys on the first two holes, Tiger took charge and swung for five birdies in six holes on the back nine. However, he faltered on the final round for a disappointing finish.

However, it was Rory McIlroy who began to emerge as the bonafide leader of the tournament on opening day. The 25-year-old shot a six-under-par 66 to take the lead in the first round.

On day two, McIlroy maintained a steady lead and was four shots ahead of Dustin Johnson and Sergio by midday.

Congrats to Rory! Take care of that Claret Jug. Pull it close and hug it tight. Get ready for the PGA Championship!
