James Garner Dead: TV & Movie Icon Dies At 86

So sad. James Garner, an actor who had one of the most illustrious careers in Hollywood, has died. The actor passed away on July 19 at the age of 86, police told ABC News. Police say he died of natural causes.

James was one of the first actors to enjoy success in both television and movies. He was widely known on television for his leading roles in The Rockford Files and Maverick. He won a Primetime Emmy for his role as Detective Jim Rockford in 1977.

However, James had quite the success in movies as well and he was one of the very first actors to excel in both realms. He starred in films such as The Great Escape in 1963, Grand Prix in 1966, Space Cowboys in 2000 and Murphy’s Romance in 1985. He received an Oscar nomination for his role in the latter.

James also had a starring role in the 2004 classic The Notebook, alongside Ryan GoslingRachel McAdams and Gena Rowlands. He played the older version of Ryan’s character.

The actor is survived by his wife, Lois Clarke. He married her after 14 days of just meeting her. He has one child with Lois, Greta “Gigi” Garner.

Our thoughts go out to James’ family and friends as they mourn this loss. Hollywood has lost a true icon.

James Garner was one of my favorite actors. I loved him in Maverick and I remember very well the episode he did with another great Clint Eastwood. Jim was also very good in the Rockford files costarring with old time great Noah Berry Jr. And the movie Duel at Diablo co-staring Sidney Poitier, and Dennis Weaver was one of my all time favorite Westerns. Over the years Jim has provided me personally with many hours of great entertainment and he will be greatly missed.

I will miss “Ole Jimmy” and Rockford files is one of my favorite old shows. He was one of the oldies but goodies. I’m sad to hear he died. Another ‘end-of-an-era’. Rest In Peace! James.

RIP to the legendary James Garner. Even though we aren’t in the same generation I always felt a connection to James because we shared the same birthday. As a kid I thought he was the most handsome actor on TV in Maverick reruns. He broke my heart but I loved him in The Notebook. It’s amazing that in Hollywood where long term relationships are rare, he was married for 58 years.
