The sole survivor of the horrific family slaying in Texas on July 9 is 15-year-old Cassidy Stay. The teen played dead after being shot in the head by her ex-uncle, a move that ultimately saved not just her life, but also the lives of others.
Cassidy Stay, 15, is a hero. Even though her entire immediate family was shot dead — including her 4 younger brothers and sisters, ages ranging from 4 to 13 — Cassidy bravely survived being shot in the head, and somehow found the strength to alert authorities about her estranged uncle, Ronald Lee Haskell, 34, and his alleged murderous rampage.
Cassidy Stay Is A Hero After Family Slayed By Estranged Uncle
On Wednesday, July 9 in Houston, Texas, Cassidy Stay’s actions took her from shooting survivor to heroic teenager in a matter of minutes.
After her ex-uncle forced his way into the home by posing as a FedEx delivery man, he kept Cassidy and her four younger siblings — Zachary, 4, Rebecca, 7, Emily, 9, and Bryan, 14 –hostage until their unsuspecting parents, Katie and Stephen Stay, returned home from work.
The hostage situation ended with Ron shooting all 7 members of the Stay family execution-style in the back of their heads. Somehow, by some miracle, Cassidy survived being shot. She played dead until Ronald left, and then managed to remain conscious long enough to call 911 and alert authorities of the attack. Cassidy may have lost a finger in the shooting, reports Daily Mail.
Not only did the extremely brave and resilient Cassidy call for help, but she was able to tell the 911 operator that she believed Ron was headed to her grandparent’s home next. It has since been reported that Ron was demanded the location of his ex-wife, Melanie Lyon, who was Cassidy’s aunt — her mom’s sister.
Because of Cassidy’s heroic actions, police tracked down Ron and chased him in his vehicle for 25 minutes before cornering him in a residential cul de sac. Harris County Police completely blocked off the street with multiple cars, and then had a standoff with Ron for several hours until he finally surrounded.
Cassidy not only saved her own life by playing dead, but by calling 911 and revealing Ron’s thirst for more family victim’s, she also saved her grandparents lives.
Cassidy Is Expected To Make A Full Recovery
On July 10, the Lyon-Stay family released a very detailed statement about Cassidy’s brave actions as well as her recovery.
“Cassidy Stay, 15, who survived the attack, is expected to make a full recovery. We are grateful for this miracle,” the family statement reads. The statement was obtained by HollywoodLife.com from the Harris County Police Department.
The family continues to acknowledge Cassidy’s strength, and shares that there are even more details about her bravery that have not yet been reported.
“We are in awe of her bravery and courage in calling 911, an act that is likely to have saved all of our lives. She is our hero. More information will be forthcoming in the days ahead about her heroics, but right now we want to concentrate on getting her well.”
HollywoodLife.com would like to send our condelences to Cassidy, as well as both the Stay and Lyon families at this devastating time.
