Whoa. The penultimate episode of ’24: Live Another Day’ was a crazy one. Cheng’s crazy plan started to unravel and Jack raced to take him down. Everyone’s lives are at stake and it’s going to make for one epic finale.
The July 7 episode of 24: Live Another Day was the show at its season best. Jack (Kiefer Sutherland) and Kate (Yvonne Strahovski) raced against the clock to take down Cheng Zhi (Tzi Ma) once and for all, Mark’s (Tate Donovan) betrayal was finally revealed and Audrey (Kim Raver) became the target of Cheng’s torture once again. Read on for a full recap!
’24: Live Another Day’ Recap: Worst Fears Realized
After the unintentional U.S. attack on the Chinese carrier, President Heller (William Devane) was made aware of what was up. This was basically the worst thing that could have happened to the President on top of an already terrible day.
Meanwhile, Jack and Kate were battling the Russians in a crazy shoot out. Bullets were flying everywhere, it’s so shocking how Jack and Kate managed to remain unscathed. Thank goodness federal agents showed up right after Jack and Kate ran out of bullets. Otherwise, they would have been in T-R-O-U-B-L-E.
This was only a distraction of the bigger problem: Cheng Zhi. While he was figuring out his next move, one of minions found Jack on security footage. “Bauer,” Cheng seethed. He was worried that Chloe (Mary Lynn Rajskub) had a tracking device on her, but she was clean. Cheng was taking Chloe with him. “What’s in her head is extremely valuable,” he said. Chloe attempted to go after a phone, but Cheng knew her game.
As Jack tracked the override device to its location, he found everyone dead, including Adrian Cross (Michael Wincott). The override device was gone and Cheng had smartly left the tracker behind. However, Chloe had left Jack a little nugget of information. When she went after the phone, she turned on the recorder! Jack was stunned at the voice on the phone. It was his most dangerous enemy, Cheng Zhi. Jack knew he had to get to the President and fast.
Jack called Heller and told him of Cheng’s reappearance. Heller said there was no way he was alive. Cheng was killed 3 years ago as he tried to escape from a Chinese prison. Nope. He was alive and well and wanted to basically destroy the modern world. Audrey, who was brutally tortured by Cheng, was stunned at the news. All she could really mutter was, “He was dead. Everyone said he was dead.”
Jack believed that Cheng wanted to start a military conflict between the United States and the Chinese and then Russia would get involved. (Sorry Jack, that was just Mark.) Jack also found out that Mark had given the order to have Jack handed over to the Russians. Poor Mark, he is about to Bauered.
’24: Live Another Day’ Recap: ‘I Could Never Hate You’
Because she wasn’t in the previous 24 loop, Kate wanted know what Cheng had to gain between a war with the U.S. and China. If the U.S. went to war with China, then Russia would have easier access to Eastern Europe. Jack realized that the Russians must have gotten Cheng out of prison to make this all happen.
Doing his presidential duties, Heller tried to appease the President of China’s anger for the sinking of their carrier. He revealed that Cheng Zhi gave the order, not the U.S. But the President wasn’t in a forgiving mood. “Whatever happens today is on your head,” the President told Heller. Thankfully, Audrey had a contact at the Chinese Embassy she thought could help.
Since Cheng was back in their lives, Jack made a heartfelt call to Audrey. She was adamant about Jack killing Cheng by whatever means necessary. “I need you to know that the only reason I surfaced today was to protect your father for you,” Jack told Audrey. He told her that things were about to get complicated (i.e. maybe killing Mark) and that he didn’t want her to hate him forever. “I could never hate you,” she said with tears in her eyes. “I never have.” (Ugh, these two are so meant for each other.)
The Chinese were in the process of targeting U.S. naval bases and Heller’s team told him that he needed to be ready to retaliate. Everyone wanted to raise the alert level of nuclear forces but Heller. He wasn’t going for that. For now.
Jack was a man on a mission and his next target was Mark. Jack came to see Heller and asked to get a room with him and Mark. (Mark would rather die at this point.) As soon as they entered the room, Jack put a gun straight to his head. He asked why Mark would give him up to the Russians. Heller couldn’t believe what he was hearing, but it was true. Mark spilled his guts about everything, including the forged signature. He called Jack a political liability and said his job was to keep the President’s hands clean, even if his had to get dirty.
But Jack, always Mr. Obvious, asked Mark who would benefit from a war between U.S. and China. RUSSIA. Heller was ready to arrest Mark for treason, but Jack needed him. He was going to use Mark’s Russian contact, Stolnavich, to get to Cheng.
’24: Live Another Day’ Recap: Eyes On The Target
Jack and Kate prepped Mark for his little date with Stolnavich. Mark was obviously worried about the whole thing, because he could, you know, die. Jack instructed him to persuade Stolnavich, since he’s been so good at it before. Jack also told Mark to stay low when the bullets started flying. (Gulp.)
Mark tried to make up for his serious act of treason. He was willing to do whatever it took to make it right.
Yes, Chloe was still being held hostage by Cheng. But she went total badass and jumped out of his truck. She took a tumble down a hill and hit her head. Cheng and his minions went after her, but after British officers told him to move his truck, Cheng bolted.
The missiles were beginning to be launched by the Chinese. As soon as the screens went black after the missiles took out surveillance, Heller agreed to raise the threat level to Defcon 3. (This should end well.)
Mark managed to get into Stolnavich’s lair. As you could tell by his face, he was totally on edge. He was sweating bullets as he waited for Jack and Kate to breach security and come to his rescue. It all happened so quickly. Suddenly, Stolnavich realized what was up and went after his gun. Mark attacked him and they went at it. After they flew through a glass door, Stolnavich had a glass shard in his neck. He pulled it out and bled to death on the floor.
Jack rushed to his side to find out any information about Cheng. “My country has not forgotten what you’ve done.” He died on the floor before he could say anything else.
Over in a very dark and secluded park, Audrey met up with her Chinese contact. She handed over information about the override device and told her to hand the info over the Embassy. She agreed. As she was leaving, a sniper took out the contact and Audrey’s bodyguards. (Who takes the President’s DAUGHTER to a dark and secluded park?!)
Audrey got a call and it was Cheng on the other line. He told her to sit back down on the bench. “Maybe I’ll allow you to live.” (Oh no.)
HollywoodLifers, what did you think of tonight’s 24: Live Another Day? Do you think Audrey will be able to survive this one? Will Jack save in just in time? How amazing and smart is Chloe? How will Jack save the day in the finale? Let us know!
