A new report claims that at least 63 Nigerian women and girls have returned back home after being abducted by Boko Haram. The group of women and girls, who were allegedly kidnapped by the terrorists in June 2014, somehow managed to flee captivity and return home to their families unscatched.
A small amount of good news comes out of Nigeria on Monday, July 7.
Somehow, 63 women and girls managed to escape captivity after allegedly being abducted by the Boko Haram in June 2014. The AFP confirmed a report that all 63 women and girls returned to their homes on Sunday, July 6.
The report first surfaced when a local vigilante in Northeast Nigeria, Abbas Gava, revealed that he “received an alert from my colleagues […] that about 63 of the abducted women and girls had made it back home.”
The 63 girls and women who were being held captive seized an opportunity to escape after their camp was left completely unsupervised. It is believed their captors left the girls and women after being overwhelmed by soldiers in the area.
Even though this is good news, CNN reports that at least 200 schoolgirls remain in the Islamist terrorist group’s captivity since their original abduction on April 14.
After the abductions began in April 2014, multiple celebrities and political figures, including Michelle Obama and Anne Hathaway, have been raising awareness with the #BringBackOurGirls social media campaign.
