While we’re completely heartbroken that Zendaya decided to drop out of the the Aaliyah biopic, she took time at the BET Awards to speak exclusively to HollywoodLife.com and reveal why she decided to make the shocking decision.
Zendaya Coleman is not that somebody — but she’s okay with that. The 17-year-old looked absolutely stunning in an all-blue ensemble at the BET Awards when she told HollywoodLife.com that she had a personal reason for deciding to drop out of Lifetime’s biopic about Aaliyah.
Zendaya’s Reason For Leaving Aaliyah Biopic
“Basically, I just felt that because I love her, and because I respect her so much as an artist, I don’t want to do anything that’s half or anything that’s less for her,” the actress told us on the red carpet at Nokia Theater June 29.
When Zendaya landed the role, she told us that she was absolutely thrilled to be playing one of her idols — but Zendaya’s family was reportedly upset that they weren’t asked first, and they felt a Lifetime biopic wasn’t big enough for her. It caused a ton of backlash from fans of Aaliyah that agreed.
Zendaya: I Care About Aaliyah So Much, I Wanted It Done Right
“I felt like some things with the production weren’t all the way there, the project wasn’t all the way there. If I’m going to do something for someone I care about so much, I have to do it the right way,” Zendaya added.
Earlier that day, Lifetime confirmed the news on Twitter, writing, “We are sad Zendaya will no longer portray Aaliyah. Production is currently on hold.” Additionally, Zendaya wrote, “Aaliyah has always been a source of inspiration to Zendaya. She was honored to portray her and pay tribute to her…”
We’re super bummed this isn’t happening — so who do you think will take over? Are you sad that Zendaya’s out? What do you think, HollywoodLifers?
