When Lionel Richie hit the stage at the BET Awards on June 29 to accept his Lifetime Achievement Award, there was one big problem! His name was misspelled when it flashed on the screen!
Lionel Richie, 65, is a beloved American singer-songwriter, so it was a shock to everyone when he took the stage at the BET Awards on June 29 to accept his Lifetime Achievement Awards speech and his name was spelled wrong! The name that flashed on the screen was “Lionel Ritchie” instead of “Lionel Richie!”
Lionel Richie: BET Awards Misspells Singer’s Name During Speech
Lionel Richie is the man and voice behind some of music’s greatest hits like “Hello” and “Endless Love.” So it was completely baffling that when he accepted his Lifetime Achievement Award in music on June 29 that the BET Awards misspelled his name!
As he was accepting his award, the BET Awards misspelled his last name as “Ritchie” instead of “Richie.” Oh no! It’s a simple mistake, but a mistake nonetheless.
Lionel was presented with the coveted award by Pharrell Williams, 41. Pharrell tweeted his excitement about awarding one of music’s greats: “Congratulations to Lionel Richie for receiving the BET Lifetime Achievement Award. #BETAwards.”
On hip hop and R&B’s biggest night, Lionel Richie proved he is still as relevant as ever with his performance medley of “Easy Like Sunday Morning” and “All Night Long.” Lionel’s performance of such classics was an incredible throwback and it shows just how great he is when he hits the stage.
Even though his name was misspelled, the error didn’t take away from Lionel’s big night at the BETs whatsoever. He is a true legend.
