Matt Lauer Grills GM CEO Mary Barra On Motherhood — Too Far?

Fri, June 27, 2014 1:04pm EDT by Lauren Cox 1 Comment

Yikes. Did Matt Lauer push it when he asked GM’s CEO Mary Barra if it was possible to do her job and be a mom at the same time? Watch the video and decide for yourself.

Matt Lauer, 56, sat down for an intense one-on-one with General Motors’ CEO Mary Barra on June 26. However, the interview took a turn for the worse when Matt crossed a line and took it upon himself to insinuate that Mary was not capable of running a major corporation while also being a mother of two.

Matt Lauer Asks GM’s CEO Mary Barra About Being A Working Mom

Well, this is awkward.

During a one-on-one interview with the CEO of General Motors, Today Show correspondent Matt Lauer definitely put his foot in his mouth.

Matt Lauer: It Was Sexist To Ask GM CEO Mary Barra If She’s A Good Mom

First, Matt told Mary that he was “treading lightly” while asking her whether or not she got her job solely because she was a woman and a mother. Matt suggested that GM put her in the position to help “soften” their business troubles in 2014.

Then he asked her if it was even possible for her to be the CEO of a major corporation and a mother at the same time.

“You’re a mom, I mentioned. Two kids. You said in an interview not long ago that your kids said they’re going to hold you accountable for one job — and that is being a mom. Given the pressures of this job at General Motors, can you do both well?”

Yes, he really just asked her that. Thankfully, Mary was a true professional who kept a smile on her face as she responded with a diplomatic and truthful answer.

“You know, I think I can,” she replied immediately. “I have a great team, we’re on the right path. We’re doing the right things. We’re taking accountability. Also, I have a wonderful family, a supportive husband, and I am pretty proud of my kids and the way they are supporting me in this.”

Well said, Mary. We are so happy to see that she stood her ground and proved Matt’s assumption wrong.

Even though he pre-empted his questions by stating that he was “treading lightly,” it is extremely unfair to ask a woman if she can balance her job and her kids under any circumstances.

Think about it: Has anyone ever asked a man the same question?

What do YOU think, HollyMoms? Was it fair for Matt to ask these questions or did he go too far? Let us know your thoughts below!
