Here are the games to watch today, from the USA’s battle on:
12:00 p.m. ET — USA Vs. Germany
I don’t know if I can really capture how much this game means — with World Cup fever in the U.S. higher than ever, a disappointing showing would be truly heartbreaking. But besides the fact that Germany is the second-ranked team in the nation, the U.S.’s outlook is actually pretty decent. With a tie or a win, the red, white and blue will advance. Germany will also advance with a tie, which has led many to speculate whether the two teams will collude to ensure that they both go through. But if the U.S. lose, their hopes will rest entirely on what happens with…
12:00 p.m. ET — Portugal Vs. Ghana
With one point each, Portugal and Ghana are both on the outside looking in. A tie gets them nowhere — it’ll just guarantee spots in the Round of 16 for the U.S. and Germany. What they’ll both be hoping for is first, a loss by the United States, and second, a convincing win to defeat the U.S. in the goal differential tiebreaker. With a current goal differential of -4, Ghana has the better chance of eclipsing the U.S. with a big win. Unfortunately for them, two of their best players, Sulley Muntari and Kevin-Prince Boateng, were sent home before the match due for disciplinary reasons.
4:00 p.m. ET — Algeria Vs. Russia
With so much on the line for the U.S., we can barely think about these 4 o’clock games, but a lot is still on the line in Group H. Algeria is in the best spot of the three teams still vying for a spot in the Round of 16 — with a tie against Russia, they’ll likely go through. But Russia will certainly be looking to screw up the Desert Foxes’ plans with a win. With a victory, the Russians will just have to hope that South Korea can’t pull off a more convincing win against Belgium.
4:00 p.m. ET — South Korea Vs. Belgium
Which feels like a pretty safe bet, what with Belgium being the strongest team in Group H. Belgium doesn’t have much to play for in this game though, so the South Koreans could pull of a miracle. But if you ask us, Algeria is going to be the team that advances along with the Belgians this time.
