Meriam Yahya Ibrahim, 27, has not had it easy these past few months. After her death sentence was overturned and she was freed from a Sudan prison, the mother of two was arrested a second time — accused of attempting to use forged documents to leave the country. Now, Meriam, along with her husband, Daniel Wani, and their two children, Martin and Maya, are free and ready to leave for the states.
It’s official — the Sudanese mother who has been imprisoned by Sudan since May 16 has finally been released, reports The Guardian.
On Tuesday, June 24, Meriam, her husband Daniel, and their two young children were arrested at the Khartoum Airport where they were trying to catch a flight back to the United States. All four members of the family were detained by the National Intelligence and Security Services who accused them of using forged documents to flee Sudan.
Just hours before Meriam had been released from a prison cell where she cared for her toddler son, Martin, and gave birth to her newborn daughter, Maya. Meriam had been charged with apostasy for declaring herself a Christian, and adultery for marrying and having children with her Christian American husband, Daniel.
An appeal finally overturned Meriam’s charges, which originally left her facing death by hanging once her newborn was done nursing, and she was given back her freedom.
Now that she has received her freedom a second time, Meriam and her husband are ready to finally get on a plane with their children and start their lives over in the United States.
Meriam’s second round of freedom came thanks to foreign officials who continuously pressured the Sudan government to release Meriam.
State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf confirmed that the United States was helping Meriam and her family secure a “safe” and “swift” departure from Sudan, reports the Daily Mail.
We genuinely hope to see Meriam and her family arrive safe and sound in America as soon as possible!
