Zendaya was super excited to be cast as Aaliyah in the upcoming Lifetime biopic, but will her excitement be cut short? A new report claims producers have been frantically searching for a replacement — namely Rihanna! HollywoodLife.com has the exclusive details!
Many Aaliyah fans were totally upset that Zendaya Coleman will be taking on the iconic tole in Lifetime’s biopic of her life. We think she was a great fit — and it sounds like we’re not the only ones! However, could Rihanna be in talks to take the role?
Rihanna Taking Over As Aaliyah In Biopic?
“The [Zendaya] backlash is huge. Either the network is going to have to replace her, or shut down production. Right now they’re negotiating with Rihanna to play Aaliyah. And [Rihanna’s] interested,” a “top Hollywood insider” told MediaTakeOut.
However, HollywoodLife.com has learned exclusively that that’s not the case.
“If Lifetime could have got Rihanna they would have got her first,” a source close to production told us exclusively. “Zendaya fits all the requirements the role needs. She’s young, she can sing, she can act and she has a fan base that will come over and watch the movie. Plus economically she is way more affordable then Rihanna would ever be.”
Zenday Responds To Backlash Over Aaliyah Role
We’re super happy it’s still going to be Zendaya!
It didn’t take long after the announcement about her taking the role for backlash to come in though — but that would have happened to anyone taking on such an iconic role!
“A lot of people know me from the Disney Channel . . . and maybe they don’t think that I can handle the role, but at the same time I was cast for the part. I auditioned for the role like everyone else, and I was cast,” Zendaya responded to the criticism in an interview with Access Hollywood. “My passion, my love for Aaliyah is so strong that I feel like I’m just going to channel her and do my best to honor someone that I love so much and have taken so much from in my career”.
Way to speak out Zendaya! We hope that she’ll still get her chance to do just that! Do you think she’ll be great, HollywoodLifers?
