ABC jumped into the reality competition game with the premiere of ‘Rising Star’ on June 22. The show stands out from other singing series with real-time voting — is it a hit?
‘Rising Star’ Is The Realest Reality Show Ever — But Does It Work?
Rising Star premiered on Sunday, June 22 with a star-studded panel of Kesha, Brad Paisley, Ludacris and Josh Groban, plus a great display of talent.
But what really stood out to me was the live-voting element.
With fierce competition in the singing reality genre — ahem, The Voice — I have to give it to Rising Star for attempting to do something different with “genius technology” aka a real-time voting app, which lets viewers see their votes turn up immediately on the stage.
Even if the truth hurts for the contestants (sorry, Daniel and Olivia), it’s fun to watch the results pile in right in front of our eyes — it seems like it would be TV gold to watch singers get sent home with only 6% of the votes in their favor, and no support from the judges (oops, “experts”), but it’s not.
Now that I think about it, live-at-home-voting was a big fail with Ryan Seacrest‘s Million Second Quiz. Hmm…maybe everyone should just stick with Ryan’s grey beard American Idol, and let the votes rack up overnight.
Rising Star also took a tip from The Voice by kinda-sorta doing blind-esque auditions, but what’s the point of putting singers behind a wall if you can still see them?
Too Much Technology!
Again, the real-time voting app is a great idea, and I get that everyone’s trying to get with the times these days. But how much is too much?
Between the app and the Instagram auditions, Rising Star was screaming, “Look at me, look at me!”
For the record, 17-year-old Instagram “winner” Macy Kate was downright amazing, but does anyone really believe that they plucked a random girl out of the audience and let her perform on national television, 20 minutes later with no rehearsal? (You shouldn’t because she spoiled the surprise on her Facebook, announcing to her fans, “sad news, I had 2 cancel my stageit tonight…I had something really exciting come up TONIGHT that I can’t tell u about yet but stay tuned.”
Macy Kate, not sure how much longer I’ll be tuning in for.
Are The A-List ‘Experts’ Rising Stars?
Kesha, Brad Paisley and Ludacris sit on the “expert” panel (because they’re just like us!) and Josh Groban takes center stage as host. Yes, Josh Groban is hosting — I did a double take, too.
I do love that the show put together musicians from different genres — Kesha is the crazy pop star, Brad as the country crooner and Luda, the hip-hopper — but unfortunately, they’re not the next love-to-hate panel. Each expert’s vote weighs in for 7% and the rest of the opinions go to America, but with Kesha voting “yes” to everything and Ludacris voting “no,” it’s not much of a surprise.
I will say that Josh got increasingly funnier, as the show went on. Still, he should grab that mic and stick to “Raising Us Up” via serenade. Not emceeing.
HollywoodLifers, what did you think about Rising Star? Do you agree that it’s not the next big hit or are you hooked? Let me know!
