Director Rian Johnson, who directed three amazing episodes of ‘Breaking Bad,’ will head up Episode VIII of the upcoming ‘Star Wars’ series, he confirmed in a hilarious tweet on June 20.
Rian Johnson is about to add one of film’s most popular movie series EVER to his resume. Rian, who won a Directors Guild of America Award for his work on Breaking Bad, will take over the Star Wars directing responsibilities for the next flick from J.J. Abrams (who is directing Star Wars: Episode VII), according to reports.
‘Star Wars:’ Rian Johnson To Direct ‘Episode VIII’
Rian will write and direct Star Wars Episodes VIII and IX, according to Deadline. Producer Ram Bergman is on board with Rian for the flick. To celebrate what must be one of Rian’s most exciting professional projects yet, the director tweeted a clip from the movie The Right Stuff that features the Astronaut character Alan Shepard saying, “Dear Lord, please don’t let me f**k up.”
“Johnson will take over the core film franchise, and he’ll get started quickly and this will be his preoccupation for quite awhile. Technically, he’ll write that second treatment but the intention on both sides is that he direct the two installments,” Deadline reports.
The Star-Studded New ‘Star Wars’ Cast
Episode VII has been filming for a little more than one month. The cast includes veterans including Mark Hamill,Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford. New stars like Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver and Lupita Nyong’o have also joined the cast. Star Wars: Episode VII will hit theaters until December 18, 2015. No word yet on when Episode VIII will be released!
