A big congratulations are in order for Audra McDonald! The two-time Grammy award-winning actress made history for her sixth Tony win at the 2014 Tony Awards on June 8.
Audra McDonald, 43, took home the 2014 Tony Award for Best Lead Actress in a Play for her portrayal of Billie Holiday in Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill. Audra’s latest Tony win makes her the first grand-slam performance winner. Way to go, Audra!
Audra McDonald Wins Sixth Tony Award
An emotional Audra thanked her parents for directing her towards theater as she gave her acceptance speech. This win marks Audra’s sixth Tony. She beat Tyne Daly, 68; LaTanya Richardson Jackson, 64; Cherry Jones, 57; and Estelle Parsons, 86.
Audra has won five other Tonys for her roles in A Raisin in the Sun, Master Class, The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess, Ragtime and Carousel. In addition, she has two Grammys for Best Opera Recording and Best Classical Album. Wow, that is amazing!
The Radio City Music Hall audience acknowledged the significance of Audra’s win with a prolonged standing ovation.
Audra McDonald Plays Billie Holiday On Broadway
In Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill, a bio-drama staged as a late-night concert, Audra portrays the legendary jazz singer Billie Holiday toward the end of her life.
The limited-engagement production opened in April and has grossed $5 million to date, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The play — scheduled to close on Aug. 10 — also won a Tony for the Best Sound Design of Play.
Once again, congrats to Audra on her huge win! The woman can truly do it all!
