The 28-year-old secured his ninth French Open title on June 8! He battled Novak Djokovic in four matches for the title and came away the ultimate victor. Rafael lost the first match, but dominated the final three matches 7-5, 6-2 and 6-4.

After his three-out-of-four match win against Novak, Rafael tweeted his happiness over the win.

Rafael won his first French Open title in 2005 in men’s singles and he has won consecutive French Open titles since 2010.

After losing the 2014 Australian Open to Stanislas Wawrinka, Rafael had his eyes on the ultimate French prize. This major win will allow Rafael to hold onto his No. 1 ATP ranking, according to SI.com. We anticipate quite the competition at the upcoming Wimbledon championship.

Just one day earlier, Maria Sharapova took home her French Open title. Congrats to both Rafael and Maria on their huge wins!
