So close, and yet so far. California Chrome was the favorite heading into the Belmont Stakes on June 7 after winning the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, but it just wasn’t meant to be. Tonalist pulled off the enormous upset, meaning we’ll have to wait at least another year for a Triple Crown winner.
Better make it 37 years since we’ve seen a Triple Crown winner. California Chrome was ready to make history at the Belmont Stakes on June 7, but in the end, Tonalist shocked everyone by pulling ahead and finishing off an enormous upset. Chrome finished in fourth place.
Tonalist Wins 2014 Belmont Stakes
Tonalist wins the 2014 Belmont Stakes! He took home the victory from California Chrome in a very intense and close race. Tonalist, ridded by Joel Rosario, took command of the race and crossed the finish line ahead of everyone else and denied California Chrone the Triple Crown title.
California Chrome Falls Short
After winning the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, California Chrome’s trainer Art Sherman was extremely confident the horse’s Triple Crown chances. “I feel better about this race than I have any other race, to be honest with you,” Art told ESPN three days before the race. “This horse is a good horse. I think he’s the real McCoy.” But unfortunately it just wasn’t meant to be.
Chrome was looking to become the first horse to claim the Triple Crown in horse racing since Affirmed did it in 1978 — and after two relatively convincing wins in the lead-up to Belmont, victory appeared to be a pretty safe bet. Now California Chrome joins the ignominious company of Big Brown, Funny Cide, War Emblem, and more horses who won the first two legs of the Triple Crown but fell short.
It was fun while it lasted though. HollywoodLifers, are you crushed to see California Chrome lose? Let us know!
