Valerie told the outlet that she was conceived when her mother was raped at knifepoint in Pittsburgh, Penn. Her mother was only 19-years-old. Her father managed to get away and was never brought to justice for the rape.
Despite the heartbreaking circumstances, Valerie has never let her past prevent her from accomplishing her dreams.
Valerie has vowed to educate women on how to protect themselves from sexual assault and makes that her main platform as a woman and a Miss USA hopeful.
“I believe God put me here for a reason: to inspire people, to encourage them, to give them hope that everything is possible and you can’t let your circumstances define your life,” she revealed in the interview.
