After nearly 40 years of ruling Spain, King Juan Carlos I reported he will be stepping down from the throne. Will his son follow in his footsteps as King? Hear what the King had to say!

King Juan Carlos of Spain announced in a televised statement on June 2 that he would be stepping down from his position. However, many are reported to be in favor of the 76-year-old king’s abdication because his son, Crown Prince Felipe, 46, will take over. Felipe and his stunning wife, Princess Letizia, 41, will claim the throne! What will the powerful couple bring to the nation?

King Juan Carlos I to Abdicate The Spanish Throne

Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy was the first to declare the King’s abdication on June 2 in a nationally televised address. The Prime Minister made the announcement after King Juan Carlos I had successfully signed the document stating that he’s stepping down as king in favor of his son, Crown Prince Felipe.

In a televised segment, translated by CNN, King Juan Carlos I announced that it’s “time to hand over to a new generation — younger, with a lot of energy — that can, with determination, take on and carry out the changes that the current situation demands, and to face with intensity and determination the challenges of tomorrow.”

His abdication caught most of the nation by surprise — after all, he’s been the symbol of the nation for over 40 years!

King Juan Carlos I has had an incredible impact on his nation! For some, it’ll definitely be a disappointment to see him step down. He ratified political reforms, which led to Spain’s first democratic election, and turned Spain into an economic powerhouse!

Will Felipe live up to the expectations of his father?

Princess Letizia: Europe’s Most Glamorous Royal

Spain has its own Kate Middleton! Princess Letizia has been a fashion icon from the start of her life as a royal lady.

Letizia regularly tops the charts for best dressed, not just in her own country, where she has influenced a more modern style, but nationwide.

However, unlike Kate, Letizia made a name for herself way before her engagement to the Prince in 2003. Letizia had a successful career as a TV anchor and journalist in Spain.

The stunning Princess gave up on her career to marry Prince Felipe, and they have two beautiful girls — Leanor and Sofia.

HollywoodLifers, isn’t this crazy news? Do you think the King should have announced his abdication himself, before Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy? After all this time, he’s finally ready to step down! Let us hear your thoughts on all of this!
