‘So You Think You Can Dance’: Judge Nigel Lythgoe Reveals Celebrity Judges & Season 11 Changes
Nigel Lythgoe, the creator of SYTYCD, has been at the judges’ table since the very first season, and he’s thrilled that the show has had such great success. Now in it’s 11th season, Nigel says it’s time for some changes to keep the dancing fresh and alive. (What, Justin Bieber wasn’t enough for you?)
“We’re going back to the individual winner,” Nigel revealed to HollywoodLife.com and reporters on a conference call. “We’ve been quite lenient in the past and said, ‘Which is your favorite male, which is your favorite female?’ but we’re going to make America choose.”
That means that there will only be one winner, rather than two winners — one male and one female. So the competition will be even more cutthroat!
However, there still will be the same Top 20, which is then cut down to the Top 10. “From 20 to 10 exactly the same,” Nigel said. “The judges will do that. That will be voting individually for them rather than as couples. It’s always difficult as couples, because one might be stronger than the other and they both get cut. Then from ten to nine, the judges are going to drop out all together this season, and the lowest vote will go home.”
Nigel also revealed some of the celebrity judges that will be guesting on Season 11. “We’ve got a lot of good guest judges,” Nigel said. “Tara Lipinski was terrific. Obviously Adam Shankman is back. Christina Applegate is back. Jenna Dewan was tremendous. She’s coming back.” And on the May 28 premiere, Jenna Elfman and Wayne Brady stopped by the first round of auditions.
But the biggest celeb of all is Justin Bieber who’s introducing the new dance crew component in the first four audition episodes.
Justin Bieber Joins ‘SYTYCD’
Justin made his debut on the premiere, and he’ll be presenting dance crews, which Nigel says will stay separate from the individual competition.
“Obviously we don’t want to get in the way of the main competition. So this is going to occurring over the audition shows,” he says, adding that two crews will be introduced on each show and Justin will be urging fans to vote on Twitter.
After dance crews are featured and fans vote on Twitter, the top crews will have the chance to dance on the show, and the top crew will perform on the finale.
“We’ve known a long time that he’s a fan, but we’ve never been able to do anything him. He’s always been so busy,” Nigel said.
We’re so glad that Justin cleared up his schedule and made time for SYTYCD!
