On the May 13 episode of ’19 Kids & Counting,’ Jim Bob and Jill are still in Nepal getting to know Jill’s potential courter, Derick Dillard. When Derick asks Jill to court, does she say yes? Let’s find out!
Jim Bob and Jill Duggar,22, have traveled halfway across the world to meet Jill’s potential courter, Derick Dillard, in Nepal. After months of texting and video conferencing, are Jill’s expectations met when she and Derick finally meet in person?
Jim Bob & Jill Visit Derick in Nepal
After months and months of anticipation, Jill and Derick were finally able to meet in person when Jill convinced Jim Bob to travel to Nepal with her. Being the ever supportive father that he is, Jim Bob agreed and Jill was able to meet Derick in person after a long three months of supervising his Skype chats with Jill.
Derick confessed to Jim Bob that he plans on asking Jill to enter into an official courtship with him at some point during their trip — and Jim Bob plans on keeping it a secret from his daughter.
“When Derick asked me if he could court Jill, I told Derick that I wouldn’t tell Jill anything about him asking me because I really wanted him to be the one to ask Jill first.” Aww!
While Jim Bob and Jill are hunting for souvenir’s for the entire family, Derick visits a local jewelry store to have something special made for Jill. Then the three ride in a tuk tuk on the way to monkey temple where Jim Bob shed some light on the difficult — and sometimes awkward — situation that he is in.
” It’s a very delicate balance being a father, because you don’t want to be to strict and you don’t want to be too liberal, either, just letting them do whatever, and so I encouraged even Jill and Derick. Even in this time of kind of getting to know each other to kind of set their own standards.”
Before meeting in person, Derick and Jill had discussed their standards and their level of comfort. Jill said, “We had actually talked about it at first, before we met, so a side hug is a good medium between super closeness and too distant.”
We can imagine that this phone call was quite interesting between the two — especially with Jim Bob and Michelle listening in!
Jill continued, “The phone conversation was a little awkward actually because we were like, we both want to talk about this, we are both going to meet each other in person, but like here’s what I’m feeling. We need to talk about it or else it’s going to be super weird. So yeah, it was a little bit awkward, but I think it helped make it a lot less awkward than it would have been.”
Finally they arrived at monkey temple, and with perfect timing. Jim Bob was quite happy to be out of the tuk tuk, which he described as feeling like you are “riding in a rolling coffin.”
At the temple there were monkeys everywhere, and Jim Bob wasted no time grabbing a banana and calling over one of the monkeys within feeding distance!
Jim Bob said, “That’s the first time I’ve fed a monkey. I’ve fed a lot of kids before, but that was a new experience.” Ha!
Back In Arkansas Michelle Checks In On Jill, Jim Bob & Derick
With Jim Bob away spending plenty of quality time with Jill, Michelle strives to do the same and catch up with all of her kids. James has picked up a new hobby, the sling-shot — something that Michelle is shockingly familiar with. The two head out to the backyard where they have filled up cups with water to hit. James is great and hits the target on his first try, while it takes Michelle a couple more tries to get back in the swing of things. Michelle admitted that when she was growing up she used to shoot crab apples at the neighbors cars — I’m sure her kids just loved that!
Then Michelle wrangled together the girls for a Skype session with Jim Bob, Jill and Derick to check in and see how things were going. Jill said, “The video conference with my family was really good. It was good to see all of them and to hear how things are going, and I miss all of them and wish that they could all meet Derick at the same time that I am meeting him.”
Derick asks Jill’s sisters what he needs to know about Jill, where younger sister Jessa, 21, admits that Jill is one of the more emotional members of the family — typical younger sibling move! She is quick to back up her statement, saying that her big sis has a big heart and is always there for anyone who needs her. Sweet!
With the roles in the house quickly shifting as the older sisters are entering into courtships, some of their responsibilities around the house are being passed down to the younger members. Jinger has been in charge of making bread for the last few years, and it is time for her to teach her younger sister, Joy Anna, the family recipe. Jinger usually makes a batch of 24 loaves of bread per week. Joy Anna admits that she will need help the first few times, but seemed extremely eager to help and to take on her new responsibility. Michelle must be so proud!
Jim Bob & Jill Finally Head Home
Jill, being the kind hearted young woman that she is, decides to spend one of her last days volunteering in a local birthing center in Nepal. While she is there learning some new techniques at the center, the boys are out getting a Nepali shave. Jim Bob has never had a traditional shave before and admits that he is afraid of needles and razors — making this his ideal activity.
When the boys are done they head back to pick up Jill who hasn’t seen Derick clean shaven yet. When Jim Bob asks her which version she likes better she of course says that she likes him both ways — but admits to the camera that she likes him with scruff better!
After a full week of adventure and new experiences, it is finally time for Jim Bob and Jill to make the long journey home. Derick will remain in Nepal for two months and then return home to Arkansas where he will only be 40 minutes away from Jill. I bet they can’t wait to be much closer to each other.
Just as they are loading up the taxi, Derick asks to pull Jill away just to talk alone for a few minutes. That’s when he presents her with a beautiful heart necklace surrounded by emeralds and asks her to enter into a courtship with him. Awww! That was such a romantic surprise he planned.
Derick said, “I’ve really enjoyed having you here these last few days, and getting to spend time, and it’s been neat seeing you in person after video conferencing and texting and talking to you, but I have something I wanted to ask you. If it’s alright with you, I am interested in starting an official courtship. Would you be interesting in courting?”
Jill responded with an eager, “Yeah, that’d be awesome!” Yay!
We are so happy for these two! It is so nice that they already have such a solid foundation and set of beliefs to build their growing relationship off of. It also doesn’t help that they have dad’s blessing! We wish these two nothing but the best!
What do YOU think, HollyMoms? Would you travel across the world for love? Have Derick and Jill known each other long enough to begin courting? Let us know your thoughts below!
