After Michael Sam was drafted by the St. Louis Rams on May 10, he kissed his boyfriend — and they showed it on ESPN. Afterward, former and current NFL stars took to Twitter and completely bashed him! How ridiculous?
Michael Sam, 24, celebrated with his boyfriend, Vito Cammisano, 23, after he became the first openly gay NFL star to be drafted! However, the outcome wasn’t a loving one. Miami Dolphins’ Don Jones was just one of many who tweeted a negative reaction to the kiss that ESPN aired — and he was fined by the team!
Miami Dolphins’ Don Jones Dissed Michael Sam
Don, the safety for the Miami Dolphins, tweeted “OMG” and “horrible” when Sam was picked in the seventh round of the draft and ESPN aired him kissing his boyfriend. Of course, now he has now deleted the tweets. However, it wasn’t fast enough.
“We were disappointed to read Don’s tweets,” Joe Philbin, Miami Dolphins coach said in a statement. “They were inappropriate and unacceptable, and we regret the negative impact these comments had on such an important weekend for the NFL. We met with Don today about respect, discrimination and judgment. These comments are not consistent with the values and standards of our program.”
Don later released a statement apologizing, remembering how happy he was when he was drafted the year before.
“I am committed to represent the values of the Miami Dolphins organization, and appreciate the opportunity I have been given to do so going forward,” he said.
Michael Sam Gets Negative Reaction After Kiss
Don wasn’t the only one who freaked out.
Derrick Ward, former running back for the NY Giants, also tweeted and didn’t delete a whole rant, starting with, “Man U got little kids lookin at the draft. I can’t believe ESPN even allowed that to happen.”
After getting a bunch of hate tweets, he responded with a ton more: “The funny thing is people are calling me this and that on here but if u look back to what I wrote I said what he did shouldn’t had been allowed on tv for people to see. No matter if he’s gay or not. I could careless. Shoving cake in your significant others face then deep. The paring your tongue into the other persons mouth is a little over board. But people seen that as oh I’m bashing him because he’s gay. Who cares!!!”
He didn’t stop there, either!
“But for real though most of u need to read the bible. It’ll explain a lot in that book. #knowledge,” he wrote before defending himself once again. “And for the last time since u guys don’t know how to read I wasn’t against him kissing his significant other. All I said was he shouldn’t had done it the way that he did it. Even if he kissed a girl I woulda said the same thing.”
For someone who doesn’t think he didn’t anything wrong, he did quite a bit of apologizing!
