The top 8 battled it out for a spot in the semi-finals and every single performer upped the stakes. Keep reading for all the details on the incredible performances.
The competition on The Voice is getting more and more intense with each week. The elimination this week will result in three singers leaving the competition. On the May 5 show, the next season’s new coaches performed, Kat Perkins proved why she didn’t go home last week and Christina Grimmie once again amazed us with an astounding performance.
Sisaundra Lewis & Josh Kaufman Start Off Strong
The top 8 performed their hearts out for a place in the semi-finals and it was game-changing. But first, let’s talk about Adam Levine’s hair. He said he didn’t have an explanation, he just did it. Blake Shelton made a Miley Cyrus reference and Adam looked peeved. Adam said the only person he thought about when he changed his hair was Blake. (Best friends forever!)
Up first was Blake’s girl Sisaundra Lewis. Former Voice contestant Gwen Sebastian helped Blake mentor Sisaundra. Sisaundra chose Tina Turner’s “River Deep, Mountain High.” Her performance was fun and sassy. Plus, her vocals were out of this world. All the coaches praised her performance. Usher called her a diva and Shakira noted that her “vocals were astonishing.”
Usher’s only remaining artist, Josh Kaufman, was up next. Josh went with Bonnie Raitt’s “I Can’t Make You Love Me.” The performance was absolutely beautiful and touching. Blake said it was “as perfect a performance as I’ve seen in seven seasons” and Usher called it amazing. There’s no doubt about that, Usher!
Blake and Gwen performed their latest hit “My Eyes” and it was crazy good. Blake is such a knockout performer every single time he hits the stage.
Kat Perkins Rocks It Out
Adam brought in fellow bandmate James Valentine from Maroon 5 to help his team. Since Kat Perkins was close to going home last week, she knew she had to go big or go home. She decided to perform Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky.” Kat proved she had endless range by singing a heavy metal rendition of a funk tune. At the end of the song, Adam stood up and cheered. The crowd was roaring so much that Usher couldn’t speak! When the crowd calmed down, he said Kat was incredible. “Bottom three my ass,” Adam told Kat. He praised her rendition and called it one of the most unique and incredible performances he’d seen.
The Top 8 Grace The Stage
Like Usher, Shakira also only had one contestant left. Kristen Merlin chose “Drive Your Truck” by Lee Brice. Kristen gave one emotional performance. Blake complimented her risk on a tough song and said she just kept getting better. He also made a joke about how Adam copied Kristen’s hair and it was priceless. Shakira was moved by her beautiful rendition and said it was unbelievable.
New coach for next season, Pharrell, made his first appearance on The Voice to perform his new song “Come Get It Bae.” As always, Pharrell slayed it.
Team Adam’s Delvin Choice was up next. In a radical move, he went with “I Believe I Can Fly” by R. Kelly. His rendition was effortless and totally goosebump-inducing. Usher said it was incredible and Adam told him that he deserved to make it till the end.
Audra McLaughlin from Team Blake followed. She chose “Forgive” by Rebecca Lynn Howard, a slow and emotional song. She owned the tune and her last note brought down the house. Blake gave her a standing ovation and Shakira declared, “Vocally, I think you’re unstoppable.” Blake agreed and believed she would make it far.
Country crooner Jake Worthington was up next. Jake was feeling a bit under the weather because of allergies, but he wasn’t going to let that stop him. He performed “Hillbilly Deluxe” by Brooks & Dunn and totally rocked it out. He told his allergies to take a hike and he gave an entertaining performance. Shakira admired that he “attacked every note” in his rendition. Adam told Jake he was so much cooler than Blake and loved how he was learning so much from Jake about authentic country.
Christina Grimmie Closes Out The Night With Another Amazing Cover
Christina ended the night with another incredible performance. She was reeling from the loss of her two best friends, Bria Kelly and Tess Boyer, in elimination last week, but wasn’t going to let that effect the competition. She was also worried she couldn’t top last week’s amazing Drake cover, but Adam had a plan. He offered up “How to Love” by Lil Wayne as her follow-up performance and she went with it. She slowed the song down and made it her own. The result was a powerhouse performance that was easily one of the best of the night. Even Adam was mesmerized by her vocal ability. Blake told Christina, “You look and sound like a superstar.” Shakira was floored with how much artistry Christina had. All in all, it was sheer magic watching Christina transform that song.
