California Chrome blew away the field in the 140th running of the Kentucky Derby on May 3, under blue skies, and 70-degree weather at Churchill Downs. To honor this champion thoroughbred we’ve created a list of five things you didn’t know about California Chrome.
1. California Was A very Cheap Horse!
California Chrome paid $7 to win, $5.60 to place and $4.20 to show. Commanding Curve, who finished second, paid $31.80 to place and $15.40 to show.
2. California Was Picked To Win The Kentucky Derby:
Favorites don’t usually win the Kentucky Derby. “Were California Chrome to win Saturday’s 2014 Kentucky Derby, he’d be the first favorite at under 3-1 odds since Big Brown won as a 2-1 favorite in 2008,” SB Nation.com stated.
3. California Chrome’s Jockey Wins More Than California:
California Chrome’s jockey Victor Espinoza won the Kentucky Derby for the second time. He won from the 5th position in 2002, which is the same position California Chrome raced from today.
4. California’s Trainer Art Sherman Predicted The Big Win:
“I really think this horse will run all day long. He’s got that kind of a stride to him. There’s no wasted motion. I don’t think a mile and a quarter (the Derby distance) will be a bit of trouble for him,” said Art before the race.
5. California Chrome Knows How To Win Often:
The champion thoroughbred won four straight races before claiming the Kentucky Derby Crown.
