Kat & Tess Kick Off The Top 10 Competition
Before the Top 10 went into battle, British band Rixton opened the show with their hit “Me and My Broken Heart.” After they got the crowd pumped up, Kat Perkins took the stage.
Kat Perkins set the bar high, as the first performer of the night. The Team Adam singer sang an awesome, raspy and soulful version of “Landslide.” During the judging session, Kat shed some tears of happiness, and Blake commented that it was nice to see the softer side of her, as she took on a more country, feminine version of her rock persona. Usher and Shakira both had high praise for Kat, too, as did her coach Adam. “I’m so happy that we got to share [the song] through you to a generation of people that didn’t necessarily know it, and man, am I so happy that you were the song’s representative because you are a blissfully perfect, amazing singer, and I love having you on my team.”
Tess Boyer from Shakira’s team was up next with Paramore‘s “Ain’t It Fun.” And it certainly was fun! Tess’s performance was upbeat and enjoyable, and so was her voice. Dressed in a bright yellow cutout dress, Tess looked bright and strutted her stuff across through the spotlight. Adam told Tessa “you should be really happy with that,” adding that she looked comfortable on the stage and looked like she was having a good time. Blake said that he would challenge any singer to find a point when Tess’s pitch wasn’t perfect: “She never misses a note!” Usher agreed with Blake, and also complimented the singer for being comfortable in her skin. And Tess’s coach Shakira loved that her contestant was sassy and confident! “You have this sexy tone when you sing low, and I think that’s so, so rare in this competition because everybody wants to sing high. Shakira said that she is “over the moon!” We love seeing a proud coach!
Audra McLaughlin Secures Her Spot In The Competition WIth A Huge Moment
Audra McLaughlin from Team Blake took the spotlight with a sultry ballad, and she was dressed the part in a gorgeous white, floor-length dress.
Audra’s coach Blake gave her a standing ovation, and Usher said that performance took her to another plateau. Shakira said “you’re not going anywhere,” and also confidently said that she is going to make it into the top five this week. Adam said today was her best performance, calling it a “world class vocal performance” that is “as good as any vocal performance can be.”
Of course, Blake approved! The words “proud,” “excited” and “incredible” came about, and Blake told Audra, “you just had one of those moments.” Yep. One of those moments.
Christina Grimmie Stuns With A Drake Performance
Christina Grimmie of Team Adam surprised the audience, choosing to take on Drake‘s “Hold On, We’re Going Home.” Christina totally made the R&B hit her own with an acoustic version, and even got on the piano. Who knew that she played the piano?! Wearing a white romper and a matching blazer, the young YouTube singer stunned with her standout performance, huge vocal range and creativity with the arrangement.
Blake kicked off the judging session by telling Adam that now they’re even, meaning that Christina killed it. Usher said that not only did Christina secure her spot in the finals, but she also made Drake proud. Talk about a compliment! Shakira said this was the 20-year-old’s best performance.
“Here’s why I’m a Christina Grimmie fan, and here’s why everyone in this country should be a Christina Grimmie fan,” is how coach Adam started off his critique! He added that she “fearlessly did something that was not my idea,” and complimented Christina on her passion and artistic choice. “There’s no ceiling for how proud I am of you,” Adam said. Well done, Christina!
The Top 10 Singers Take The Stage
Josh Kaufman had a tough act to follow, but pulled it off with a great show of “This Is It.” Although his performance was a bit boring, Josh’s voice was perfect throughout the entire song. Shakira pointed out that Josh has a sweet spot for soulfulness and made sure to let him know how impressive he is. Adam said that he very angry that Josh is not on his team, but told Josh just how talented and unique he is, telling him that he has a tone unlike anyone else. Blake said Josh is as good as a record. Usher was overly pleased with Josh, complimenting his feminine tone — but in a good way! — saying “I look forward to seeing you here longer.”
Jake Worthington put on a good concert, as always! The likable country crooner sang a melodic ballad, and all of the judges praised Jake for his talent and performance, especially Blake. “That was solid,” Blake said, also mentioning that George Strait would be proud of his rendition! He also told Jake that he’s gained such a great following because he represents everyone “in between LA and New York City,” and is a “real dude.” Jake agreed, saying, “I’m doing this for the little people!”
Bria Kelly is always a standout with her incredibly raspy voice, and tonight was no difference. The teen “scream queen” (that’s what we’re calling her now) sang Avril Lavigne‘s “I’m With You” and she made it her own with huge notes. Adam said that Bria is one of his favorites, which is why he wanted to be critical — he said that she didn’t seem connected to the song and that there’s more that needs to be seen from her, but his comments were all in Bria’s best interest because she is one of his favorites. Blake said that Bria was like a “completely different artist tonight” with moments of the “bluesy, rock girl that we know.” Coach Usher complimented Bria for growing and straying from her norm, which is what needs to happen in this tough competition. “Everybody’s not going to get it…that’s what I loved about it.” Poor Bria shed a few tears, and looked extremely sad. Keep your head up, Bria! You were great!
Delvin Choice switched it up tonight with a rocker performance to “Bright Lights.” The huge performance was quite the change for Delvin who proved that he can sing anything. The R&B singer took on his rockstar person, running into the audience and even getting Carson Daly onto the stage! Blake said he’s taking it to another level and Adam loved that Delvin used the audience. “You could feel it in here!”
Kristen Merlin sang Passenger‘s “Let Her Go.” This week, Kristen certainly did not have a microphone malfunction — Blake agreed! “I’ll be damned if that wasn’t my favorite performance by you,” he said. Shakira said that she’s starting to see the real Kristen, and that she represents minorities in this competition, unlike Jake who represents the majority!
Sisaundra Lewis closed the show with another amazing performance. Sisaundra was dressed in red, and sounded red hot! “There used to be a roof in here, but it’s gone,” joked Adam, adding that “once again, that was out of this atmosphere.” Coach Blake agreed with Adam. “Oh my gosh Sisaundra, you make me look so smart, and no one has ever been able to do that!”
