Tito Vilanova: Former FC Barcelona Coach Dies At 45

The former FC Barcelona coach had been battling cancer and several players who once worked under him are speaking out about the tragic loss.

Tito Vilanova died on April 25 and the world of futbol is deeply saddened. He had been diagnosed with a tumor in his throat in 2011 and stepped down as the coach in 2013.

FC Barcelona released a statement about their former beloved coach:

“FC Barcelona is in immense mourning. Tito Vilanova has died at the age of 45. May he rest in peace. It will be open to anyone who wishes to express their sympathy and love for the late Tito Vilanova. The club wishes to express its most heartfelt sympathy to his family, who are being joined in these moments of mourning by FC Barcelona members and fans all around the world, as well as the rest of the footballing and sporting world.”

A memorial service is said to take place in the upcoming days but in the meantime there has been a huge outpour of support and grief from players.

Despite his battle with cancer, he never said that he wanted to quit. He was forced to resign when his cancer resurfaced in July of 2013. Tito leaves behind his wife, Montse Chaure, and their two children.
