Around 7:14 a.m., emergency responders were called to the Connecticut high school about 11 miles from New Haven, Conn. after Maren had reportedly by choked and stabbed.
“There was blood on her neck. It was awful,” Sam Garcia, a 16-year-old junior said, according to Reuters. “I saw the girl lying on the stretcher when they took her out.”
The fight allegedly happened after the boy asked her to prom and she declined. The prom was set to take place at 7 PM on April 25 at banquet hall in nearby Stratford, but has now been canceled. Officials have not commented on the reports that the dispute was over prom.
Elizabeth Feser, the school’s Superintendent, identified the girl and added that she was a well-liked student at the school, ABC 40 reports. The boy, also 16, was taken into custody, Police Chief Keith Mello confirmed.
Maren was taken to Bridgeport Hospital where paramedics did all they could to help her, but she sadly died shortly after.
We are keeping Maren’s family and friends in our thoughts.
