Russell Wilson, the 25-year-old quarterback of the Seattle Seahawks, should have his mind on preparing for the next football season, but his marriage is evidently broken beyond repair. After being wed to his wife Ashton Meems, 27, for two years, Russell announced on April 23 that they would be divorcing.
Russell seemed to want to get out ahead of the news, breaking his divorce before any news outlet could, so in a somewhat odd move, the Seahawks released a statement on his behalf:
I have made the difficult decision to file for divorce. Clearly, decisions like these don’t come easy. Ashton and I respectfully ask for prayers, understanding and privacy during this difficult time. Moving forward, I will have no further comment on this matter.
Russell and Ashton married in 2012, just three months after Russell was selected in the third round of the NFL Draft by the Seattle Seahawks.
But the two had been together way longer than that. The couple met in high school, then had a long-distanced relationship while Wilson was at North Carolina State and she was at the University of Georgia, according to CBS Sports. They got engaged in August 2010, just five months before Russell transferred from NC State to Wisconsin.
We hate to see such a good-looking couple split, but as Russell said, “decisions like these don’t come easy.” What do you think, HollywoodLifers? Are you surprised Russell released a statement about his divorce? Let us know.
