On the first half of the ‘Teen Mom 2’ reunion special, we get to catch up with stars Leah Messer and Kailyn Lowry. During the reunion, Leah breaks down when Dr. Drew asks her to explain Ali’s heartbreaking condition, while Kailyn is forced to reveal she is still physically abusive to her husband, Javi Marroquin.
Leah Messer Breaks Down Over Ali’s Condition
Leah is thrilled to tell Dr. Drew Pinsky that little Ali is doing great, and she loves going to pre-school.
Dr. Drew tells everyone that the biggest concern about teen mothers is that their daughters are extremely likely to repeat their mistakes. When he asks Leah if this is a concern of hers, she shares that she will make sure her children know about the consequences of having unprotected sex at any age.
When a montage of Leah’s struggles through the previous plays, she tears up watching Ali trying a power wheelchair for the first time.
Dr. Drew confronts Leah about her battles with her husband, Jeremy Calvert, over his career. Leah explains that she is not trying to interfere with his career, but instead try and get him to work on his communication skills. While he was away at work for five weeks, Leah says she only spoke to him “about four times.” Obviously, she has a right to feel neglected. Dr. Drew doesn’t seem pleased with her response though, and he pushes her to admit she doesn’t accept her career. However, Leah continues to explain that she just wants to know that she and the girls come first.
When it’s time to talk about Ali’s condition, Leah is immediately emotional. Dr. Drew points out that she is the only one who has embraced Ali’s condition, while everyone else seems to tiptoe around it. Leah breaks down while explaining the condition, especially when Dr. Drew mentions that the condition is “progressive.”
“She is the most sweetest little baby,” Leah says through tears. It’s heartbreaking to watch, especially because she always seems so strong during Ali’s troubles.
Dr. Drew asks about Corey Simms‘ denial of the situation, but Leah states the he is “coming around.” Her biggest concern is that if he doesn’t accept it now, how will he be able to be there for Ali in the future when things get worse?
At the time of the reunion, Ali had not received her own power wheelchair yet. Leah says that Ali feels “free” when she uses one though, so she is looking forward to Ali having that freedom.
Corey Simms Admits He Fully Understands Ali’s Condition
After a short break, Leah’s ex Corey joins her on stage with Dr. Drew to discuss his denial issues. “I’ve accepted the fact that there’s obviously something physically wrong with Ali, it’s just that I’m holding onto faith and hope that it’s gonna somehow cure itself,” the father of two explains. Corey’s fear is that if Ali sees him down and out about her condition, that will make her feel down and out about it as well. It’s nice to hear him admit that he has accepted her physical handicaps, but hopefully he is just keeping his emotional response to the condition under lock and key.
When Corey is asked to explain his understanding of Ali’s condition, he shows that he really does know what is going on with his daughter no matter how much he doesn’t want to talk about it. Corey states that her condition is rare, and that it can affect every muscle in her body — like her heart. His concerns are the same as Leah’s: that now they no longer know what to expect when they go for check ups with Ali.
Corey still gets the girls on the weekend, and he feels that he and Leah co-parent their girls great — which is SO true. These two are the perfect picture of co-parenting, actually, which is surprising because of their young age.
Leah admits that she doesn’t talk to Corey’s wife Miranda much, and he suggests that they talk more often. However, Leah claims that she feels like Miranda doesn’t like her that much. Corey and Leah both agree that their significant others have issues with jealousy because of their relationship and constant contact, but they do understand that the couple shares a bond and two very special little girls.
Jeremy Calvert Wants More Kids With Leah
Next up for Leah’s reunion segment is her handsome husband, Jeremy. The first thing you notice is that the couple are sitting very close to each other, and Jeremy has his arm around his wife.
Jeremy shares good news almost immediately: he finally has a job close to home that allows him to be there for Leah and the girls. Leah admits that they have not started couples therapy like he agreed to during the season, and she would still like to go. Jeremy doesn’t seem into it, but even Dr. Drew thinks it’s a good idea for them.
When Dr. Drew confronts Jeremy about resisting couples therapy, Jeremy says he is not resisting any more and that he will go if Leah still wants him to.
They continue to talk about Jeremy’s work, and he explains that he works grueling hours to make sure that his family — Leah and the three girls — have a roof over their head and food on the table. He is only 25 years old, but he is already supporting a large family. It’s clear that the hard work is taking it’s toll on not just Jeremy, but his relationship with Leah. Even though the two seem lovey-dovey now, what happens when Leah is unsatisfied with his work schedule later on?
Dr. Drew asks Jeremy and Leah if they want to have more kids, and Jeremy is the one to answer with a definite yes. But when? Don’t get your hopes up just yet — it looks like it will be some time before these two add to their family.
Kailyn Lowry Admits To Abusing Her Husband
Kailyn is excited to share that her son Isaac Rivera has really embraced being a big brother to her second son, Lincoln Marroquin. So cute!
It’s no surprise that Kailyn gets emotional watching a quick montage of the previous season. Watching little Isaac give her away at her wedding got to her the most, and she later explains that that was actually a last minute decision.
Apparently, Isaac thought it was the best idea, because “to this day” he still wants them to get married again and again.
After watching the clip, Kailyn is rightfully infuriated by her ex Jo Rivera‘s comment that he hoped her water would break early. He brought her unborn child into an argument over custody of their son, and there was no reason for it. Kailyn is absolutely right, and no one should ever wish risking the life of a child on anyone.
At the time of the reunion special, little Lincoln is only 11 weeks old. Thankfully, Kailyn admits she did not have postpartum syndrome after giving birth to Lincoln like she did when she gave birth to Isaac. This is great to hear, because postpartum can really take a toll on young moms and their children.
While talking about her marriage, Kailyn admits that being married is not what she thought it would be. In fact, it’s much harder than she anticipated. The last time the couple fought was just one day before the reunion, and Kailyn admits that she still gets physically violent with Javi Marroquin. Apparently, she smacked him in the face during their fight less than 24 hours before her interview with Dr. Drew.
Kailyn clearly does not want to talk about the physical abuse she inflicts on Javi, but Dr. Drew continues to push her because he wants her to get some help for it.
Javi Marroquin Is Frustrated With Jo Rivera
After a break, Kailyn’s husband Javi comes on stage to talk about their arguments. Javi admits that the fights start because he gets so frustrated over having no control when it comes to Isaac, especially when Isaac’s father does not live up to his responsibilities.
Javi admits that he and Isaac have gotten very close since Lincoln was born, because while Kailyn is busy with the baby, Isaac started coming to Javi more often than her.
The biggest problem in Kailyn and Javi’s relationship seems to be that Kailyn is not used to having another person so involved in her life. She grew up very independent because her mom was so hands off, but now that Javi is around and giving his opinion sometimes Kailyn just does not want to hear it.
Another problem seems to be Isaac’s father Jo, who Javi says is “always looking for the easy way out.” This gets under Javi’s skin, because more often than not Jo’s lack of responsibility affects his life with Kailyn. This is where fights begin, and Dr. Drew tells Javi that he has to stop taking these things out on Kailyn. He suggests that maybe Javi try talking to Jo about his issues instead, but Javi doesn’t think that’s a good idea.
On a happier note, Kailyn and Javi get to talk about how exciting their wedding day was. Javi admits that he started crying before Kailyn even walked down the aisle, and that Isaac completely stole the show.
Javi Marroquin Is Frustrated With Jo Rivera
Jo is also in attendance, and he joins Kailyn and Javi on stage for an update with Dr. Drew.
Kailyn shares that she invited Jo and his new girlfriend Vee to Isaac’s birthday party, but neither one of them came. There’s no explanation for it, but Jo does admit that Kailyn might finally be over the fact that Vee is now a fixture in Isaac’s life.
It appears Kailyn is still frustrated that Isaac misses school to go visit Jo, but she does admit that she doesn’t think Jo is a bad dad. I can’t help but wonder what Jo is going to do when Isaac does have to start going to school full time, because no elementary school is going to allow him to miss four or five days a month.
The biggest struggle Kailyn and Jo seem to have is scheduling drop offs and pick ups for visit, and while Jo blames the distance Kailyn blames his selfishness when it comes to their son. Kailyn admits that she wishes they could be more like Corey and Leah, where all four adults prioritize the children and are able to co-parent together.
Dr. Drew suggest that Jo work on his relationship with Javi, but Jo doesn’t seem very interested. Though he says he has no awkward feelings toward Javi, things definitely seem very tense. When Jo finally apologizes for wishing bad things on Javi’s unborn son, Javi doesn’t believe it’s sincere.
Yikes. It definitely did not seem like these two were at each others throats during the previous season, so this is all very surprising! Kailyn’s goal is to get everyone on the same page, and Dr. Drew thinks that’s a reasonable request. Hopefully, they can all start to move forward and work together — if only for Isaac’s sake.
The second half of the Teen Mom 2 reunion special airs Tuesday, April 22 @ 11/10c on MTV.
