Jane Martin, 8, is just one of the many inspiring recovery stories following the tragic Boston Marathon Bombings on April 15, 2013. Read how the sister of Martin Richard is staying positive, and embracing her new life.
Richard Martin’s Sister Jane: Life After The Boston Bombings
Jane suffered two devastating losses when a bomb went off underneath her family’s feet as they stood against the barricade at the Boston Marathon on April 15, 2013.
First, Jane lost her older brother Martin, the youngest victim killed during the horrific terrorist attack, and then she lost the lower portion of her left leg.
However, the little girl is not letting these losses hold her back. Now using two different prosthetic legs, including one that allows her to run and play with her friends, Jane’s inspiring recovery story is touching hearts everywhere.
Jane has named her prosthetic leg “Luvvy,” and on her first day of school in Sept. 2013 she was brave enough to wear a skirt that proudly displayed her new accessory.
Jane Underwent 14 Surgeries To Repair Her Leg
After the bomb went off underneath the Richard family’s feet, everyone but their son Henry was seriously injured.
Jane lost the bottom half of her left leg, while her mom Denise lost an eye after it was hit by shrapnel. The head of the family, Bill Richard, underwent surgery to have shrapnel removed from his legs.
Jane’s injuries were the most severe, and she underwent 14 surgeries in the 10 weeks following the Boston Bombings.
By Summer 2013, Jane had finally learned to walk again, and she was able to be released from the hospital and go home with her family.
On Christmas Day that same year, Bill and Denise surprised Jane with a new prosthetic leg — a curved one that allows her to run comfortably.
What an inspiring little girl Jane is! Maybe one day we will see her running in the Boston Marathon in honor of her brother, Martin.
