Senior year is here! The April 15 season premiere of ‘Awkward’ was filled with many, many changes for our Palos Hills teens.
The April 15 season premiere of Awkward was everything and more. Our favorite teens returned with high expectations for their senior year. Jenna (Ashley Rickards) bounced back from her no good, very bad junior year, Tamara (Jillian Rose Reed) dealt with some overwhelming issues and Matty (Beau Mirchoff) returned being perfect, as usual. Let’s get awkward!
‘Awkward’ Premiere Recap: Greetings, Seniors!
After a scandalous and dramatic junior year, Jenna had new plans for senior year. She had a dream of her future, including her being a writer. This dream segued into sexy time with dream-Matty and her parents walked in on her getting in touch with herself, let’s say.
After a relaxing morning, Jenna headed to school for the first day. She thought this year would be different, since she was back to normal Jenna again. However, Sadie (Molly Tarlov) was quick to remind her that some things never change.
Tamara was overwhelmed with her presidential duties and Jake (Brett Davern) had done a complete 360 over the summer. This Jake-over included a sexy, scruffier look and a guitar.
After her closure with Matty at the prom, Jenna hadn’t seen McKibben all summer. Jenna assumed that he was still taken. However, Matty returned to school single and admitted he’d missed hanging out with Jenna at camp!
During the assembling of the senior class photo, a new girl showed up and took everyone by storm. Eva (Elizabeth Whitson) made a very John Hughes-esque entrance. Everyone took notice of the new girl on the bleachers. But Jenna had bigger problems. Class ranks were released and Jenna found out she was 137! (What a great start to senior year!)
Jenna went straight to Valerie (Desi Lydic) to talk about college. Valerie gave her some tough love, which Jenna totally deserved after all she’d put Valerie through. Jenna had no participation, an embarrassing SAT score, among the worst things. She mentioned that Ming (Jessica Lu) transferred to Vermont to get into a decent school. Valerie got real and wanted Jenna to find what makes her special.
While Lissa (Greer Grammer) was stuck in Africa, Sadie had garnered new minions, including Meaghan Martin from 10 Things I Hate About You! Sadie was angry about her class rank as well and was determined to be valedictorian.
In order to look more involved, Jenna took on the role of cheerleading equipment manager. Lissa returned from Africa and even adopted a little brother! He wasn’t actually wasn’t so little. He was a hot, British 18-year-old named Tyler. The practice was all about cheer captain and the vote came down to Lissa and Sadie. Jenna cast the final vote and sided with…Lissa! This only increased Sadie’s hatred of Jenna Hamil-toe.
‘Awkward’ Premiere Recap: Uh-O!
Tamara’s new role as Student Body President occupied all of her time and she had built up a lot of stress. Unfortunately, Jake wasn’t satisfying all of her needs. Tamara asked Jenna what she knew about the Big O, which only increased Tamara’s fear about Jake. Later, Tamara and Jake made out and she tested her theory. Jake was happy, but Tamara was not.
Lacey (Nikki Deloach) and Jenna headed to the mall where Lacey continued to tease Jenna about her morning “ritual”. While discussing this very personal matter, they ran right into a shirtless Matty! Jenna asked about Bailey and he said he hadn’t seen her in months. The pair fizzled after prom, which delighted Jenna.
Jenna also had to deal with the impending Senior Sleepover. She didn’t want to go single, but Lacey forced her to go. However, Jenna and Matty got the chance to talk a little bit. They reminisced about how Jenna forced him to take her to Twilight. This throwback to the old Jenna and Matty was great. The two former flames even woke up holding hands!
Jake and Tamara also got the chance to talk about their relationship problems. Tamara revealed that she’d never really had the big “O” with him. He was determined to fix this problem. In the process of fixing Jakara, they broadcast their woes to the entire senior class on the intercom.
‘Awkward’ Premiere Recap: Everything’s Changing
To Jenna, everyone seemed to have it together but her. She made a to-do list, but was preoccupied with McKibben thoughts. Her college essay asked her what she was good at. Initially, she thought she wasn’t that special. Her parents encouraged her to just start writing. And when she did, the words just starting rolling. Her past experiences made for a meaty essay.
Her focus was cut off when Matty came to her back door and wanted to talk. It was awkward at first, as if they didnt know where they stood with each other. However, what Jenna thought was a ploy to get back together was Matty just needing help on his college essay. Jenna got peeved and snapped at him. Always so noble, Matty didn’t flinch and he left.
Jenna was upset that Matty had come for help with his essay and not for her. She called Tamara, but she just started spewing her own complaints. Tamara just needed to chillax and she took care of her problem herself. (With the help of a toothbrush.)
Kevin (Mike Faiola) forced Jenna to eat after she had been hard at work on her essay. When they stopped by a food truck, Jenna discovered Sadie working! Jenna realized that everyone had a lot going on and it wasn’t fair for her to snap at people who had the same stresses as her. Jenna tried to thaw the ice between her and Sadie by offering Sadie a ride home, but Sadie refused.
Jenna mended her bridge with Matty by helping him with his essay. She apologized for being so stressed and then they kissed! (Finally!) Now this is how to start off senior year.
