A 14-year-old Dutch girl was arrested in Rotterdam, Netherlands on April 14 after she allegedly tweeted American Airlines claiming to be a terrorist. In the shocking message, the young girl called herself ‘Ibrahim’ and claimed to be a part of the terrorist group, Al Qaida. After the airlines replied to her and let her know they were taking her tweet seriously, the teenage girl claimed it was just a joke gone wrong.
The only public information about the 14-year-old Dutch girl who threatened American Airlines on Twitter is that her first name is Sarah and she is from Rotterdam, Netherlands.
Teenager Tweets Terrorist Threat To American Airlines
On April 13, a teenage girl named Sarah wrote an alarming tweet to American Airlines official account.
“Hello, my name is Ibrahim and I am from Afghanistan. I am part of Al Qaeda and on June 1 I am gonna do something really big bye,” the tweet from @QueenDemetriax_ stated. It was a scary message that was straight to the point, which sparked a response from American Airlines within two hours.
“Sarah, we take these threats very seriously. Your IP address and details will be forwarded to security and the FBI.” American Airlines warned. Shortly after, Sarah deleted the tweet, which prompted American Airlines to delete theirs and release an official statement via their Twitter.
“At American, the safety of our passengers and crew is our number one priority. We take security matters very seriously and work with authorities on a case by case basis.” the airline stated, letting everyone know that they were not letting this threat fly just because it was made on social media.
The following day, the information was tracked back to a home in Rotterdam, Netherlands where the teenage girl accused of writing the original threatening tweet was arrested. Since the arrest, her Twitter has been suspended.
Sarah Freaked Out On Twitter Before Being Suspended
Not long after American Airlines responded to her original threat, Sarah deleted the message.
For the rest of the afternoon, the young girl expressed her concern over the airlines response to her message, which she said was just a “joke” gone horribly wrong. At one point, she even blamed her friend for writing the tweet.
“I need a lawyer. Any lawyers on here?”
“Omg someone’s knocking on the door. Maybe it’s the FBI omgg”
“At least I have something to tell at school tomorrow lol”
“It was my friend not me—”
“Why would I blow up one of your planes, I have my own jet @AmericanAir—”
After the story went viral, the Rotterdam Police Department posted a tweet to reassure everyone that the matter was still being taken seriously, and a suspect had been arrested.
“Dutch girl (14) from Rotterdam arrested after American Airlines threat. Investigation continues,” their Twitter account read.
There is no word on whether or not the young girl will be charged, or if she has been released yet. Hopefully, this really was just a joke gone wrong.
