Michigan State Spartans player Adreian Payne, 23, has suffered a heartbreaking loss. His biggest fan, 8-year-old Lacey Holsworth, lost her cancer battle on April 9. The pair reportedly text messaged each other “every day” after meeting at a Detroit, Michigan childrens hospital in March.

Sad news for a family in Michigan.

Lacey, also known as “Princess Lacey” to those who knew her, lost her battle with neuroblastoma on April 8 in her family home in St. Johns, Mich.

The little girl suffered from the vicious cancer, which is a tumor that develops from nerve tissue in infants and children.

Lacey was best known for her unusual friendship with college basketball star Adreian Payne, a player for the Michigan State Spartans.

“Please don’t let her love and smile fade,” Adreian told the Associated Press in a text message after news of Lacey’s death broke.

Lacey & Adreian Met In The Childrens Hospital

Lacey was a huge college basketball fan, and of course the Spartans were her favorite team. She met Adreian when the team paid a visit to the childrens hospital she was staying in when she was just 6-years-old. They have been friends ever since.

In fact, the two text messaged each other almost every day for two years. Adreian became a close part of Lacey’s life, and even attended her birthday parties.

“Forever my brother. Forever my team.” Lacey captioned a photo of herself with Adreian at a Spartans game on Instagram.

So sad. Our thoughts are with Lacey’s family and Adreian at this time.
