Good for Tyler! The courageous lead singer opened up about his sexuality in the new issue of ‘Rolling Stone,’ revealing for the first time that he is gay.
Neon Trees lead singer Tyler Glenn, who has been a Mormon his whole life, is revealing that he is gay in a new interview with Rolling Stone magazine. In the March 28 issue, the Utah native admits, “I’ve always felt like I’m an open book, and yet obviously I haven’t been completely.”
Tyler Glenn: Neon Trees Lead Singer Reveals He’s Gay
Tyler says he knew he was gay at a young age, but decided not to tell anyone.
“I had my crushes on guys throughout high school, but it was never an overwhelming thing until my twenties,” Tyler says. “Then I’d be dating girls and in love with my straight friend and it was the worst feeling in the world.”
Growing up Mormom made coming out that much more difficult, due to the conservative religion’s stance on same-sex marriages.
“We were always taught, and I hate this word, ‘tolerance,'” he says about the church’s views on homosexuality. “The only time that felt different was when the Prop 8 thing came up.”
Tyler Glenn Credits Others Who Have Come Out
Tyler decided to come out as a gay man in October 2013, when he was writing songs for Neon Trees’ third album Pop Psychology. He goes on to say that many of those songs are about his time in the closet.
The singer credits others in the public eye who have come out for giving him inspiration to do the same thing.
“I really love all of the sports figures that are coming out recently. I appreciated Michael Sam was like, ‘I want to be able to go to the movies and hold hands with my boyfriend.’ Even hearing him say ‘boyfriend,’ I was just like, that’s cool,” Tyler says.
We are so proud of Tyler for sharing his truth and now he’ll be an inspiration for others who are still struggling to come forward, and reveal their sexuality.
