Ellen DeGeneres did a phenomenal job hosting the Oscars her second time around. The always hilarious, kind, and graceful host made the March 2 ceremony delightful to watch, making the sometimes too-snarky awards a positive experience for all.
Ellen DeGeneres was delightful at the Academy Awards on March 2, leading a joyful and positive ceremony that was funny without being mean, and touching without being cheesy. Find out why she was a perfect host below!
Ellen DeGeneres Hosts The Oscars — Why She Was Great
Ellen started off her second show with a bang — the opening monologue featured the talk show host doling out hilarious-yet-classy digs at the nominees, who seemed delighted to be laughed at for once. No one was safe — not even 18-time nominee Meryl Streep — but Ellen’s jokes were so tame that no one seemed too worried about a potential Ricky Gervais situation.
She continued to host the show with class and enthusiasm throughout the night, throwing in hilarious bits like the time she scared the crap out of Sandra Bullock and Leonardo DiCaprio as they were mid-conversation. She also sat in Zac Efron‘s seat as he gave out his award — little moments like this made the night seem personal and fun; and not too formal like it’s been in years’ past.
She even did a hilarious bit where she tried — and succeeded — to take the best selfie in human history. Meryl, Julia Roberts, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Jared Leto, Lupita Nyong’o, Kevin Spacey, Channing Tatum, and more participated, so it’s pretty safe to say that Ellen will be the reigning selfie queen for quite some time.
I mean, come on — she even offered to order pizzas! If that’s not the makings of a wonderful Oscar host, than I don’t know what is.
Oscars Opening Monologue — Digs At Jennifer Lawrence & Jared Leto
Ellen also completely killed it during her opening monologue. She had several great bits, but her joke about Jennifer Lawrence‘s 2013 Best Actress fall — which occurred mere minutes after she Jennifer fell on the carpet headed into this year’s awards — was pretty amazing. “If you win tonight, I think we should bring you the Oscar,” Ellen said.
What did you think of Ellen’s second go-round as host, HollywoodLifers? How do you think it compared to her first time?
