‘The Voice’ Star Christina Grimmie Talks Miley Cyrus & More
Congrats on an incredible blind audition! Can you describe the feeling when all four judges turned around for you? “I don’t know if that’s something that can even be described. It’s one of those things that you can only really feel when you’re up there. When I first started singing, two people turned around, and the fact that they turned around was just like, ‘Woah, I’m really in this, singing for them and they really just turned around!’ So when everyone else turned around, honestly, I don’t really have words for that. It was just an incredible feeling knowing that all four coaches were just really pulling for me.”

What was it like to relive your audition last night, watching it on TV? “It was amazing. I actually didn’t even know I was going first so that alone was a shocker. It was all kind of a blur. I couldn’t recall a lot that happened, and then watching it again was just like, holy crap! That’s what happened!”

Why did you ultimately chose to be on Team Adam? “I was mainly leaning toward Adam before everything. He said something about how you never know who you’re going to turn around and be looking at, but he said he turned around and saw this person who has the entire package so the fact that he said that means that he just doesn’t see me as a good voice. He sees me as a good voice, and a good performer [with] star quality. To me, that was just incredible to hear from Adam Levine!”
Why did you choose to sing Miley Cyrus’ “Wrecking Ball” at your audition? “I’m the girl on YouTube that covers the latest pop songs and puts my own spin on it. ‘Wrecking Ball’ was just the perfect song for me because if I had done a cover for YouTube, I probably would have changed it the same way I would have changed my blind [audition]. I knew it would be the perfect song to sing for the judges, and my existing fans and new ones.”
Are you fan of Miley? “She’s off the beaten path. She’s not really the innocent girl she used to be, and I don’t have anything to say about that. But what I do respect about her is that she doesn’t really care what anyone’s saying. The fact that she’s going about her life the way that she wants to go about it, I think that I can learn from that. Miley has done a lot. Her whole life, she has been a star. I would like to have the success that she’s had.”
Speaking of success, whose career would you like to follow? “Vocally, I really love Christina Aguilera. She’s always been my favorite, and the success that she’s had [is] because she’s known for her voice, and if anything, I want to be known for my voice.”
So are you upset that she’s not a judge this season? “Yeah! I was a little bummed. Not to say that I don’t love Shakira and Usher — they’re amazing. But I was the big Aguilera fan so hearing that she wasn’t going to be on it, that kind of stinks. But those blind auditions couldn’t have gone any better! The coach lineup is great. I cannot complain.”
You should be celebrating — you’re already on the iTunes top pop charts! “Right?! It’s incredible to be on those charts. I went to bed last night and I was #32. I woke up this morning and I was #28 and I was like, ‘Dang! This is crazy!’ It’s unbelievable that I’m on charts. I have no one to thank, but my fans.”
What do you hope to get out of the series, if you continue to move forward? “I don’t know if I’m going to win or if I’m going to end up not going to the live [shows], but it’s all about the journey. Wherever I end up, I’m going to be happy with it. I would just really like to go all the way!”
